Last fall, I purchased a '41 convertible coupe from a member in Colorado.  I love the car, but it is a 3 speed. According to the build sheet, it was originally a very early Hydramatic car.  I'd like to put it back, but I need a '41 Hydramatic to do so.  I will take a rebuildable unit or one that is done.  Please don't suggest that I put a post-war Hydramatic in it.  I had a '41 62 coupe with a Hydramatic for 20 years and I liked it very much.  I'd prefer to locate a unit in the Midwest so I can pick it up rather than having it shipped. You can contact me via e-mail at Cad19651941@yahoo.com or jeffreyshively1965email addresses not permitted.
Thank you!

Jeff,
I have a hydramatic on a flathead in the shop. How can I identify it as
Early or late?
Thanks,
Dennis Long

There is usually a cast boss on the side with a plate riveted to it reading '41' or whatever year it is but I have found a 42 without even the boss! Another factor is a large nut towards the front bell-housing. some sort of external adjuster 46 onward.

I'd swap you an auto for your manual in a heartbeat if we weren't 1000s of mile apart Jeff ;D

Steve,
Correct….Quick external identification on the early boxes is the absence of a Pressure Regulator. There were quite a few changes internally (most notably the reverse blocking valve and mechanism) which make them a better choice, but Jeff doesn't care about that. ;)

Jeff,

Once you complete the switch, would you be interested in selling your manual transmission?  If so, could you please let me know the following:

1. Does it shift smoothly without the gears clashing?  That is, is the synchronizer in good shape?
2. Is it quiet in first and second gears?  That is, are there any "bumping" noises meaning a broken gear tooth or whines / howls meaning worn bearings?
3. Where are you located?  I live in the Atlanta GA area and if you are too far away shipping would not be economical.
