'61 underhood insulation - Which way is up?

Just bought a new underhood pad, but it's not clear which side mounts to the hood. My old one was glued with the rough insulation side facing the hood, but that didn't seem right and made it sag.  Shouldn't the smooth darker side be glued to the hood and the rough fiberglass side face the engine?
