What steering box lubricant should I use in my 1940 LaSalle? The shop manual says S-200.  I can find no modern reference to such.

(I am sorry. Originally I posted this question about "transmission lube" by mistake.  Intended to say steering box.)

Thanks,

Bob

Is it a synchronized transmission?   If so there is a lot of buzz about making sure you get a true GL4, not a GL4/5 oil.   I say buzz because its like lead and zzdp where if you read 100 posts / articles 50 of them will say its critical and 50 will say it makes no difference or is better to use modern stuff.

Most Napa's seem to stock Sta-Lube brand 85w90 that is just straight GL-4 which is supposed to be the 'classic' formula safe for old transmissions.   Part number is SL24239.   I believe there is also 'correct' stuff available from 'racing' oil manufactures.   The subject comes up a lot in the original muscle car era world.

I know nothing about a 40 LaSalle trans so maybe they were built differently so there is no possible issue.    Just wanted to mention that Sta-Lube product.   I recently worked on a car that the owner wanted to make sure it was GL-4.   He was ready to special order some fancy stuff at darn near $50 per quart with shipping when I stumbled on the stuff at my local store.   Searching for info on it after you know what you are looking for was easy and people seem to like the stuff.    I'm a big fan of in stock local stuff vs special order.

We swear by this oil. Don't know if its available in your country though?  It has to be warmed up to pour and helps to stop leaking box's.
