The year of manufacture will be the first two digits of the engine's serial number as in 51 62 00087, which is stamped on the engine block casting under the generator.  In this example, the year was 1951, the model it went in was a series 62 and it was the 87th engine made that year.  There were slight differences in the life of the 331 from year to year so it could be important to buyers of some of the parts.  Russ Hobden, #1235

The engine serial number is stamped on a boss at the upper right front of the block.  If the right (passenger's side) cylinder head is still on the block, the number is just in front of the cylinder head at the point where it joins the block.  If the right (passenger's side) cylinder head is no longer on the block, the number is on the top of the block just in front of the number 1 (forward most) cylinder.
