Title: '37 Lasalle oil filter
Post by: bayside on June 15, 2010, 10:38:17 PM
Taking apart a '37 Lasalle oil filter, I notice there isn't a filter inside, just a large cone and spring assembly.  Is the original packing just missing?  It was full of plenty of sludge.  I want to upgrade this filter to a cartridge type.  Any suggestions to what years would be compatible with this engine?  Thanks for any advice.

Gary,
Don't give up on your original filter assembly!  True, the filter may have been missing, but try going to your local NAPA  and see if they can get a #1008, which I believe is their number for the proper replacement.   It is about 3-3/4" in diameter and 4-1/2" long.  Don't think there is anything wrong w/ the original filter set up other than the inconvenience of changing a non-spin on filter.  By cleaning out the housing, I think you have reduced this task to a fairly innocuous level.  Remember, it won't always look this bad.  You may be the first person to properly clean the housing in the last 30 years! If you don't already own one, purchase an oil suction gun.  Plews makes a nice one (#30-118) which will remove most of the oil from the housing, and what little is left can be wiped out w/ a couple of paper towels.

Other members may have a different suggestion for the oil filter cartridge, but I think using the original setup makes the most sense once you begin a program of regular maintenance.

Gary,

Not sure the type of oil filter you have, there were lots of add ons.

For my 37 LaSalle, it uses a NAPA #1100.

Thi8s is the big filter not the small Purolator small filter.

Hope this helps.

Good Luck

I know this is an older topic  ;)

I am working on a friends 37 LaSalle. It doesnt appear to have an oil filter at all. (?).  I have read about the cartridge filters and what not, but I dont see anything. I am keen to adapt a spinon filter and have sent a member a message about his setup.

And I noticed that the oil dipstick tube has a Y in it, and theres this opening is not covered or anything. Is this where the the filter or something fit on?

Thanks guys -

Many Flatheads have no filter, when they do its just bolted to the head  and any openings you see in the engine are unconnected.

Yikes,

The 37 did not have the "Y" in the dip stick tubing, that came later. The 37 is a closed system, so I would guess that you have a later engine.

Oh, the "Y" is to add oil and a breather.

The '37 Cadillacs and I'm pretty sure LaSalles also had a factory installed oil filter located just under the fuel pump. They were a contained unit which was  replaced entirely when changed. NAPA used to have a replacement (#1035) whcih required changing the lines slightly. The last one I bought was a number of years ago and it cost over $50. A friend of mine cut that filter open removed all the material and adapted a spin on that fits inside. It looks like the real thing.  Harry

Scott:  It is my understanding that 37 was the only year that the factory supplied oil filters for the V8.  They were a disposable canister type filter that mounted to the front cover below the fuel pump.  The 37 engine I have had one still attached to it.  I used it on my 38 but simulated the disposable filter canister so that a spin-on filter could be placed inside.  I find it to be more convenient, way less messy and it doesn't,t take up all of the engine compartment real estate that the after market filters do.  If you want to use a spin-on filter it would not be terribly hard to make one yourself or to have a local machine shop make one.

Learn something new everyday.

From the 37 shop manual.

Very interesting. Thanks for posting. From John W's post I guess the car has a 38 engine, not surprising given the age of these cars that an engine was replaced.

Further confirming that must be a 38 is that I dont see any oil filter below the fuel pump.
Yes, if the oil gallery and plumbing is accessible I can adapt something, have to search on that topic and see what has been done already.   ;)

Scott,

Nope the 38 did not have the Y flange either, check the engine number to determine the year.
