I'm trying to locate the engine number on a 1973 472ci engine. I can locate the casting number but where is the engine number? Thanks for your assistance.

Its in the same area.  The casting number is sort of on the right side and the other number is sort of on the left.  They are usually pretty hard to read especially in a RWD car where its close to the firewall.  Its not uncommon to not really be able to read them with the engine out of the car and the block cleaned.  Maybe if you got a Monday morning engine the worker was swinging the hammer nice and hard but the rest of the week their arm must have been getting tired.
