Hello,
I have a 1976 Eldorado that has a fast idle. The fast idle occurs when I drive the car and I slowdown or come to a stop. To slow the idle down I have to place the car into neutral and tap on gas pedal. Don't know if it is the carburetor or something else?

Thanks,

G'day Bob,

Could be a couple of things, including a sticking throttle cable, sticking choke release, or even interference with something resting across the throttle pedal, and even carpet causing the pedal to not fully release.

Check the throttle return spring for tension, or lack-of.

By kicking the pedal, you are causing the throttle return to work with momentum from the sudden movement.

This is another of those things that are difficult to diagnose over the interweb.

We are assuming since you mention carb is not an EFI car?   If its got a carb several of the choke parts including fast idle work off gravity so it doesn't take much goo to make them sticky.

Thanks for the advice, I will start inspecting the items you pointed out and see if something is sticking.
