Title: 1940 LaSalle transmission
Post by: HerbP on August 22, 2017, 09:10:39 AM
Hello all,

The transmission in my 1940 LaSalle 5019 will occasionally slip out of 2nd gear and into neutral when coasting, when accelerating it stays in gear.  It doesn't happen immediately upon coasting, and doesn't happen every time.  The linkage into 2/3 feels a little loose at the shift lever on the steering column, but not sloppy, and the shifts are smooth.

Is this possibly just a linkage adjustment issue, or something more serious?

Thx,
Herb

Could be the adjustment or could be a range of things.
For rods, disconnect them at the transmission and place your shift level in the natural position and the rods in neutral. Rods should slip back on without binding. Adjust rods if necessary to obtain this.
Check all the rubber conections on the rods for play.
Check your transmission rubber mount.
Could also be the bell housing miss-aligned.

Thank you Steve.

When I look at the trans rubber mount, am I looking for positioning, and also wear and possible replacement?

If the bell housing is misaligned, do you mean how the trans is attached to the housing?

Cheers!

Yes, that's right, or how the bell-housing is attached but if the transmission has not been out for a very long time and this slipping out of gear is a new problem I wouldn't connect the two.
Look for perished rubber on the trans mount. Look for play in all the rubber rod connections and do that adjustment with the rods.

If adjustment of the rods is needed, John Washburn has the factory clamp needed to do the job.  Ask him if he'd lend it to you.

If there's a tool, I'm sure John would have it!

I bought one of Johns tools and it works great but it's for pressing the two levers on the end of the steering column the correct amount. Miss fitting levers at this position usually manifest itself by getting two gears jammed in at the same time. I doubt it would cause your slipping out of gear but who knows?

Herb who?

the name sounds familiar but it will cost him more red wine to show him how to use the tool!

See you Sunday at the car show. Perhaps will bring the tool to keep us amused.
