Try advancing the timing 2 degrees from where it is and leave the increased idle alone. Should solve your problem.

Not sure if it’s coincidence, but I recalled that I had pulled the oil-bath air cleaner and replaced it with paper, and never checked/reset the mixture.  Putting the old air cleaner with cleaned filter element and new oil seems to have cured my symptoms.

It may just be academic now, but would increased air flow with paper over the oil bath be associated with these symptoms?  Or might it be that, given a few more start cycles, this problem might return?  Thoughts?

I would think that anything that would let more air into the mixture could cause the problem and your experience of going back to the correct air filter  could easily be the solution to the problem.
