Title: 1941 Stromberg carburetor
Post by: Lars Kneller 8246 on September 18, 2017, 06:39:00 PM
Recently when I start my engine, gasoline appears to be leaking out of where the accelerator pump is. If I stop the engine, tap on the carb with a small hammer (suspecting a stuck float), then it stops when I restart the engien. Does this sound correct? Do I need a new float to fix it, and if so where's the best place to get a carb kit? Thanks.

New float won't make any difference unless it's pierced and has fuel inside. Sounds like a sticking float needle if you can tap it and it seats, or the float is not set correctly and it catching the side walls of the float chamber.

I agree with Steve that the needle valve or something actuating it binding are likely culprits. I bought my last rebuild kit from Daytona Carburetor and was satisfied with their parts. The kit was very short on instructions, so it is intended for an experienced rebuilder. They also offer rebuilding services, which include a nice cosmetic restoration. I had them do a carb and fuel pump for the 60S because of the replating they can do and I can't.

Lars,

It does sound like a stuck needle and seat but it could also be other parts that have failed or are dirty.

I would highly recommend:

for kits.

I understand that Daytona no longer rebuilds carbs.

My opinion

Daytona DOES still rebuild carbs, what they don't do is the concours restorations they used to do.  The carbs still come back looking beautiful and work to perfection.   ;D
