I have a 1939 and 1940 LaSalle engine.  Does anyone know if I can install that into a 1937 Cadillac?  Wondering if I'll need to retrofit any existing parts to make it happen.  Can I use any or all of the same 1937 components with the newer engine?  Also wondering if there's any known issues that can take place after swapping these.

To start with are you aware the LaSalle engine is a lesser cubic inch and horsepower than the 37 Cadillac engine your removing?  That said, if you have a good choice of parts it will go in there.    It's been more than 10 years since I did mine so I have to dig deep into the memory. There's a host of little things that have to be changed. You cannot use the 37 flywheel on the back of the later engine so you need the clutch and bell housing from the later unit. The later bell housing has to have some metal removed to accommodate the earlier starter. Lots of little things like this but if you have enough parts it works.

Hello Everyone!
Thank You for your response Steve.
I am new at this, CLC member since March 2017, although I did read discussions on the Forum for few years as a Guest.
The Cadillac I have is a 1937-6019, it has been a while since I really worked on it.
My kids are pushing me to get the car finished. Would love to drive it one day.
Anyway, 2 motors that I purchased recently at auction are; 1939-50 series and 1940-52 series.
I did check the serial #s. they are LaSalle motors. The 1939-50 engine has lots of parts missing. The 1940 engine is almost complete, it does have bell housing, flywheel, pressure plate, clutch disk, front timing cover, pulleys, intake and exhaust manifolds. Although no carb, fuel pump or starter. Have not disassembled it yet, still in the cleaning mode.
So, You say engine will fit, I do have plenty of engine parts, from '37 motor and '39,'40 motors. Hopefully I can make it work.
