Title: Any reports from the Grand National?
Post by: Pat Caruso CLC #17825 on June 19, 2009, 03:10:49 PM
OK, so I'm stuck here in New Jersey - where it has been raining for 8 weeks straight - and I was just wondering...what's happening at the Grand National?

Unless "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" applies to the club shenanigans, too!

Same crappy weather and curiosity from Scranton...

GEE!!!  What're we missing?!?!?!

The Board Meeting is going on now, but SOMEBODY should be having fun!

Pat,

I have been thinking the same thing: where are the club bloggers reporting from Vegas?  We got spoiled last year with our buddy Lou posting pictures from each day's events.  I didn't make it to Cherry Hill until Friday so it was great to see pictures from earlier in the week.

Hi everyone,

Yes, there is a lot going on here in Vegas!  Most, if not all, of the show cars have been moved into the indoor venue for the show in the morning.  They are telling me that if your car is not in the hall tonight, it ain't going in!  Looks like we'll have about 130 - 140 cars in total here.  Most show cars are in the hall; I'm told the Allante owners elected to not park in the hall and are in the parking deck.  Some of the display cars are in the parking deck, too.

Of late, it has been in the mid-90s.  I think it was supposed to hit 100 today, but don't know if it did or not.

The tours have been good.  We did the driving tour the day before everyone else did - great scenery.  The Maloof/Shelby tour was really good.  Mr. Maloof, among other things, owns (or did own - not sure which) the Sacramento Kings.  He has a passion for pipe organs - he has five of them in working order in his home which he opened up for us.  His car collection is really sweet, too.  Among others, he owns (32) 1941 Cadillacs.  He has Cadillacs representing each decade from the 1930s to present day.  All very nice - and mostly original - cars.

The food has been really good.  How can you go to Vegas and not eat well?

Didn't attend any of the seminars, so I can't comment on them.

The Las Vegas Region has done an outstanding job.  No reason to think they won't carry that through tomorrow's banquet.  They're a really fun bunch!

Met Bob Hoffman from this forum today.

Will try to add more later - but no promises!

Jeff

Now think about it people. If YOU were in Las Vegas, at the Cadillac Grand National, would you really care about a bunch of Schleppers on an Internet chat board?

I wouldn't until I got home. Savannah,? OK. That's one thing. Cherry Hill,? Another. But some cool places to visit. But Las Vegas? Please !!! Get real.

The Conways just got back from Las Vegas on Saturday evening- unfortunately did not attend the actual show on Saturday (early flight out).  However, I can report that there were folks having fun. I don't know how many "what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" moments were had

The welcome reception was a lot of fun, live band, and good conversation.  I can attest to the fact that there were dozens of exquisite cars present, and pride of ownership of some of the finest automobiles in the United States was evident while we we watching the owners polish and buff out their cars during the move in on Friday.  We were able to pick up an especially nice 57 gas door tail light assembly from one of the vendors present at the meet.

Special thanks to the Jipsons of the Las Vegas club for being so welcoming and for a great evening of conversation.  John, your LaSalle is just gorgeous.  Also a big thank you to all who took the time to chat with us and tell us about your car.  It was appreciated.  We are always interested in hearing about the car stories !

We were sorry that we did not meet up with Chris Milici from the New England region.  Tom and I wanted to say hello and thanks to Chris for the nice feature he wrote up for the New England newsletter on my car Lucille.

Hopefully will post some photos of our favorite cars later this week.

Wow, I gues what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas especially with regards to the Grand National. Do the results get posted on the CLC website ?  I was surprised that there aren't any results available yet.  Or does it normally take several days before the results and winners get posted ?  Or is it a secret ?

Hey Fred, did you happen to get some pictures of the nice pair of '47 coupes?  They were sitting side by side - one was a 6107 series and the other a 6207.  It was nice to be able to see the differences up close and personal like that.

Also, there was a nice 63 series 1961 4-window sedan, with the wrap around rear window.  When was the last time you saw one of those?  The color coordinated wheel covers in '61 and '62 just made those cars sparkle!

The Sunbelt collection was also spectacular.  Had to have been about 150 or so convertibles of many, many makes ranging back to the early thirties.  And, a whole separate building with probably eighty some closed bodied cars.

I'm not surprised that some people never connected with each other.  The hotel was enormous-practically a city in itself.

The host region did a great job, and they deserve our thanks.

Lynn, no it is no secret.  We will publish the results on the CLC Web site shortly once everything is audited and verified.

Rusty, there was one V-16 present, a 1939 9059 Formal Sedan.  He took second place in Primary Class 8.

Also, I have created a section in the Photo Gallery for the GN.  I will upload some of own photos there as soon as I can get to it although that may be a few days.  Sorry, my days and nights are filled at the moment.

Hi Charles
There were eleven 59's, the lineup started as follows from north to south the cars were heading west.

59 Eldo Biarritz
59 Series 62 Convertible
59 Series 62 Convertible
59 Series 62 Convertible
59 Series 62 Convertible
59 Sedan De Ville
59 Fleetwood
59 Eldo Seville
59 Truck (converted from a Coupe De Ville)

I can't remember the 11th one, but I will post some pics soon, The lineup was great a lot of fins. My 59 Convert got its first senior award. There were also 3 60 converts 2 Eldo's and one series 62.

Also there was on 57/58 Eldo Brougham but it was heavily modified with a V12 engine.

Because it is out of the Nevada sun and in the air conditioning and,  as a survivor of the 108 degree days and Cadillacs on concrete at the Dallas GN, I think that is a very good thing!

Lou, you're definitely right that the lighting could have been better.  I have pictures from the Lancaster, PA GN  which was partially indoors and it was well-lit (even one of the first Northstars under the hood of an STS shows up well). A few years ago, while in Victoria BC, I followed a 40-5219 (what else could I do?) into the underground garage at the Holiday Inn. It was well worth it because I had happened upon the annual meet of the Classic Car Club of British Columbia; but it was dark, too, and my photos didn't come out too well. All things considered, though, I'll still take slightly dark and cool over bright and hot-as-Hell any day. BTW, enjoyed looking at all the well-lit cars in your links.

Hi Rusty,
I get all of the stay out of the sun thing. We here in the North East do our car shows indoors in the winter to get out of the freezing cold. I have attended as a particapant and as a visitor to these indoor shows and they were always very well lit. It just caught me as odd to see all of those beauties in the darkened setting. Perhaps it was a "green" thing.  :)

Here's a link of pictures from indoor events held around my area for comparison.

The Vegas show WAS well-lit... the problem is with the photo-taking.....  All of the pictures I took for the first couple of days turned out inexplicably dark and then a fellow CLC member at the show gave me a tip to turn off the flash... and voila, all the pictures came out properly!!  If not for this anonymous tip, I would have continued with my frustration of dark pictures.  Live and learn!!

Did anyone take some photos of that 1958 Eldorado Brougham custom?  I normally
don't go big for modified cars (apoligies to the Modified Chapter) but this was an
exceptionally nice and tastefully done car.  It had a custom V-12 engine that was
rated at 700 horsepower.  I was told that it cost over $600K to build.

Unfortunately, I did not have time to take many pics, with all of the "stuff" going on.

The builder kept the "original" exterior look and interior (except for the tilt / telescope
steering wheel), but the mechanicals were all the best $$ could buy.  The paint was a
flawless maroon color.  Really nice!!

Rarely is the GN held in June; this year was an exception, so Gita and I were able to attend [in July-Aug, we usually spend 8-9 weeks with our family in Geneva]. We got to see many old friends and make new ones. We saw some shiny cars but not too many of my favorite "twelves" or "sixteens". Eldorado Brougham #208 was there in glorious Burgundy metallic ... with a custom V12 power plant by Dale Armstrong. We were signed up for the Sun Belt and Imperial Palace tours; both were impressive. I got to chat with Don Williams (Blackhawk auto collection, Danville, CA) about his V16 roadster with the Swiss body; he was excited when I said I could provide him with copies of photos of the car from 1937.

I chatted briefly also with Roy Schneider; he is working on a new "V-16" book!!! Later, instead of taking Gita to a fancy restaurant to celebrate our 37th wedding anniversary, I spent $100 on Maurice Hendry's new, 2-volume history, "Cadillac at 100".  I am somewhat disappointed to find quite a few erroneous or incomplete photo captions in the book; for that kind of money I would have expected a correct caption for the photo on p.160 [a Fleetwood fixed-roof "sedanette cabriolet", style #4082, described as a convertible sedan]; also I would expect to see some of my favorite models identified as more than just a "1940 LaSalle" (p.178), for example.

Kudos to Morgan Murphy for making it to the GN despite the troubles with his blue '58 Eldo Brougham. Members of Rik Gruwez' "Cadillac Mailing List" got together for tacos and margaritas (the Hirschs, the Houltons, the Kozandas and the Saunders'). My "International Activities Award" went to a well-deserving Peter Griffith, President of the UK chapter of the CLC. Dirk Van Dorst was to have got it last year ...but it got "stolen"?  This year, Dirk earned the Maurice Hendry award ... and it too was "unavaillable for presentation"!. This is bad, guys; some heads will have to roll!  Elvis and Priscilla were there with their pink '56 SdV; he later gave a rousing performance during the gala dinner.

The venue was ideal as far as exhibiting the cars is concerned. Nevertheless, Gita can tell you that the South Point Hotel & Casino is NOT "minutes away from the Strip", as vaunted in their brochure; it's more like ONE HOUR away ...unless you happen to have your own helicopter or you drive an XLR without heeding any traffic rregulations!

As fine a book as Maurice Hendry's 1973 edition of Cadillac Standard of the World The Complete Seventy-Five Year History is and as much as I have enjoyed it, it, too, has several picture caption errors.  Two examples (and these are not difficult cars to identify, particularly when they were three and six years old) are labeling a 1967 Sedan de Ville as a 1970 model and labeling a 1970 Sedan de Ville as a 1967 model.

Maybe the proof-reading and printing was done in a Non English Speaking Country?

Surprising what mistakes can happen whewn people don't know what they are doing.

Even a non-English speaker would recognize the year of manufacture mistake.  Maybe they were also non-Cadillac speaking.   ;)

Here are two pictures of Bob Hoffman's Cadillac at the GN.  Sorry these pictures are so dark, as were taken inside the parking garage.
Bob sure did a nice job in filling in the rear side windows - not a trace of the former windows.

Fred

Why did he do that? Or I could ask Bob. Why block out the rear windows? It gives it a business coupe look. For the successful Fuller Brush Man, I suppose.

Forrest, I did it because I WANTED to do it!. I feel the Fuller Brush comment was a low blow, but I'll overlook it. I just sent you a side shot directly. FYI the car was very well received at the GN. If you had attended you could have seen it in person. There are a lot more modifications then the blanked out windows. Bob

No low blow intended, Bob. I like the look.

It just reminds me of the business coupes of that era that had blanked out windows and a large storage area behind the seat. Any successful door to door salesman would much rather have a Cadillac business coupe than a Dodge any day.

:)  While I was not able to get a good picture in the very dark parking deck, want to say that the car really caught my attention and I liked the look.  What was really a surprise was the quality of the body work in filling in the side windows.   You would think it came that way from the factory.  Good job Bob.  I wish you were there at the time so that we could have met and also so that you could have explained the other features of the car.  How about mentioning these features on this forum?

Fred

Hi Fred, thanks for posting the pics. I also wish that we could have met. After 40 years in this club doing only stock work, I decided to do something different. I found this solid but neglected 41 coupe & went to work. I consider it a tribute car to Hollywood 1941, Don Lee &  Coachcraft. The top is chopped 2", the windshield raked another 16 degrees, the back glass raked a few more degrees & 1 1/2 shorter. Every molding on the top & doors has been modified. Almost drove me crazy. LOL  The rest of the body is stock except for the flush fitting skirts & the extremely rare SS stone guards. The drive train has also been modified. Modern front end, 500 motor, T-400 trans & 70 Cad posi rear end. I've also added PW & AC. My goal was to create a tastefully designed car. I hope that I have. I've sent 6 pictures to Forrest. If he doesn't post them, maybe you can. I don't know how. Glad you like it. Bob

G'day Bob,

Armed with the new information, I had to go back to the picture and observe deeper.

Beautiful work, and it is a gorgeous looking vehicle.

Any chance of sending some more of the pictures to me?

Thanks,

Bruce. >:D

Sure Bob - email the pictures to me and I should be able to post.  I can always post my own pictures, but not sure of those taken by others, as I am only familiar with my own camera (Sony DSC-T1).   Send them to my email address and I will do the rest.  I have been having trouble with my email lately, so if they don't come through, send me a PM.  Thanks,

Fred

Bob asked me to post pictures of his car and I will... tomorrow. Even though tomorrow's already here, I just drank a bottle of wine with some ice cream and cake while watching the movie, Gran Torino after having a ribeye steak for dinner. I'm tired and bloated so I 'll post a bunch of pics and details in the morning. You quys will love it. Copy them and post on the Modified board. This car is the cat's pajamamas. Bee's knees? The bomb? All that and a bag o' chips? The $hit? Choose your slang superlative.

Oh yah, rent Gran Torino. It's Clint Eastwood's best effort to date. I kid you not. It's funny as hell. My girlfriend and I thought we were watching my dad on film.

Seeing as you have had a heavy day, and night of it, I took the liberty of doing it for you.

Here is Bob's lovely vehicle.

I resized Bruce's 6 pictures of Bob's '41 Cadillac to a size that fits our format.   Does anyone want them posted in this new smaller size?   If so, I will post them.   the first two are attached in the smaller size and I can post the others if anyone has interest.

Sorry about the large size, but I like things big.

Actually, I couldn't post the ones that were sent to me because they were up in the 700 KB sizes.   I thought I reduced them enough.

Hi Bruce - Usually it is best to reduce pictures to under 100 KB to fit this forum.  I was glad that you posted, as saved them on my hard drive, then reduced accordingly.  Beautiful pictures.  Here are two more in reduced size.

Thanks Bruce,

I just got up and I still have a headache.

We should let Bob tell about his car but here are a few facts:

Modern F/E, 500 motor, T-400, 70 Cad posi rear end, power windows, AC

Roof is chopped 2" and the windshield is laid back 16 degrees

The side shot above really shows off the sexy lines of the car.  Exceptionally nice car, Bob, as a Modified Chapter member I am jealous as are the others I am sure.

I got it some months ago. I was disappointed because most of the book is already in the other book "Cadillac, the complete history" OK, there are some more pictures but basically it's the same book.

In image 5848, what are the colors of those first three '59s? They seem to be variations of persian Sand, Mountain Laurel, and something else, similar. Any insight?
