I am told there are a few technicalities when crossing the Can to US border. Has anyone done this? Also note that Canada does not have titles for cars,has anyone encounter a problem with this?
I don't know about crossing the border the other way, but to answer your query about titles, you are right and wrong.
At least here in Ontario, we have what is called an ownership. It's a small document that must be carried either with the driver, or placed in the car. It has basically 2 sections, one that will remain with the car and used for transfer of ownership when the car is sold, and the other that remains with the original owner, who retains the plates from the car. It has the plate information and should have the updated stickers attached to it.
So, when you get the car, be sure you get the correct portion of the ownership, and have the seller sign the ownership in the correct place provided.

If it helps Doug, I have shipped a few cars out of the US here to England and my experience is that cars exported out of New York or New Jersey do not need titles for the export documentation, Texas I believe you don't need that to export, that doesnt help you crossing Canada's borders of coarse. Other places like LA are much stricter and you must have a title.
The ownership as I described is the equivalent to a title. If you have that, there should be no issues.
Or have you though of having it shipped from Vancouver?

I should have mentioned also that if the owner that is registered to the car does not have an ownership, he can go to the license office, and with some identification and for $10 he can have another printed up.

Shipping out of Vancouver would be perfect,I have done that before with 2 59s and a 60 and 54 hearse with just a hand scribbled bill of sale.The situation on this one (1969 Cadillac Ambulance) is shipping it to Vancouver adds about $2000.00 to the cost.My plan is pick the car up in London.Ontario and drive it to the Professional Car Society national in Albany NY. Once thats over I will drive the car to NJ and put it into a container.Now what some of the shippers are saying is I must get the proper paperwork for the car to enter the US.And the shippers arn't that helpful.The usual thing for them is a title and all is well.Some say I have to get a 7501 or 8732 plus a 5133 form and yet they don't really come out and say these are the facts of what you must have.
Contact customs. They will give you the correct info.

I know all about it. You will need a US Customs Broker in order to do the paperwork to import the car into the US. We do have title's to cars here in Canada, they look different than in the US, and we call them ownership's, not titles, but they are essentially the same. The biggest problem with the whole deal is getting a US Customs broker. I have done it lots, if you know what your doing its OK, but it can be a nightmare if you are un prepared. I just did a '55 from Ontario to Australia in Jan.
If you can do without going to the Professional Car meet in Albany NY, aren't there ships direct from an Ontario Great Lakes port (Toronto?) during the summer that load for Australia. I once had a car shipped from Asia to Chicago via the St. Lawrence Seaway during the summer months, so there might be something. That way you'd avoid the paperwork involved when crossing the US border
I almost sold my 62 CDV to someone in the US. They wanted me to deliver it for them in the US and they'd pay my gas and plane ticket home. After checking with US customs, they informed me that either the purchaser had to be the person bringing it into the US or a customs broker to clear it. It would be much easier to export directly from Canada. If Vancouver is not an option, why not look into Montreal, Halifax, NS or Saint John, NB? All much closer than Vancouver.
