Title: Barn Find 1960 Cadillac Conv
Post by: Brian Dowell on June 29, 2012, 09:49:59 AM
Bought this car 6.25.12 Owner Ed said he is the second owner of this car. He bought it from the Cadillac Franchise Branch on 8 Mile Road & Gratiot in Detroit. (Don’t know the place it has been torn down, anyone from the area know this place.) Ed said this car was for the executive to drive back and forth to the Detroit Cadillac Plant. Ed drove this car daily and parked it in 1997 in his garage. I was driving by as he was opening the garage, pulled in called Dad and bought the car. Ed said he don’t believe the garage door has been open in over 10 years. 35000 miles. We are planning on a frame off restoration. Bob & Brian.

Nice find!

If you get a chance, could you take a photo of one of the hubcaps and email it to me at 76eldo@comcast.net please?

Looks like they have the optional black painted inserts.  Most were satin stainless but black or white inserts were an option on these.

With 35,000 miles, you may want to think about cleaning everything up and re-thinking the frame off resto until you get a chance to evaluate everything.

Good luck and keep the photos coming!

Brian

Just a quick update. We removed spark plugs, poured Marvel Mystery Oil in the cylinders. We were able to turn the car over by hand real easy.   We had the carburetor rebuilt, and a new fuel pump. Put a new fuel line from the fuel pump into a gas can. We were able to start the car and it ran perfect, smoked a little hopefully from the Marvel Mystery Oil. Only ran it for about 5 minutes. All windows work the driver’s rear went down but not going up. Lights all work, except brake lights stick on. Need new front fenders and the outside portions of both front and rear bumpers. Getting ready to start on brakes the master cylinder is dried up and sticky inside just getting into that. Really haven’t gone much farther yet. Brian.

Hi Brian,

Looking forward to seeing that car at a local meeting.  Looks like a good one to start with and a free spinning engine has to be a good luck charm.

I would rethink the frame off restoration...with 35,000 miles the engine etc are not hurt.......I started a frame off on a 53 Buick skylark in 1990...yeah, long time, but between my 60 convertible and the 53 Buick, I have lost intrest. They are both cars that have been in my family since 58 (Buick) 61 (Cadillac). I took my driving test in the Buick and went to my senior prom in the Cadillac, so I will never get rid of them, just frustrating all the work to be done.....Just my 2 cents. Good luck and keep us posted.

Any interior shots? Outside doesn't look absolutely terrible, and they're only original once. Can't be many like this left.

Wow! What a find!

For what it's worth, I think preserving the originality is far more rewarding than a frame-off on a 35,000 mile car - survivors like this with great history provide much richer interest than a re-done car!

*dont get me wrong, I have both but they are only original once!

I'd love to see it's progress!

Still working on the car! What a project. Got the bumpers back from the chrome shop. Many parts at the sandblasters. Pulled the dash out Friday getting ready to have body blasted. Posting photos of the car. On the photo of the front you can see a trailer hitch we made, we can pickup the front of the car and move it around easily. Brian
