Title: Cadillac Elmiraj V8 -- large coupe concept at Monterey
Post by: jdemerson on August 17, 2013, 08:56:34 AM
Hi,
   See

http://media.cadillac.com/content/media/us/en/cadillac/news.detail.html/content/Pages/news/us/en/2013/Aug/0815-elmiraj.html

for the announcement from Cadillac. It's a contemporary version of the 1967-70 Eldorado, at least from one point of view.

Cadillac lists a new V8 engine having the technology used on the twin-supercharger V6 announced for 2014 CTS high-end model. It is overhead cam, direct injected, and come with an 8-speed transmission. Of course the Northstar V8 is out of production, and this engine appears to be totally new (if it actually gets produced). Does anyone have more information about it? A twin-turbo, DOHC, direct-injected V8 from Cadillac does sound intriguing. NOT at all similar to the Corvette V8 in the current CTS-V model.

See for background:

Could the Elmiraj be the platform for the rumored M-B S-class competitor?

4.5L?  That is what I had in my 1992 Allante?

coming from a MB/bmw nerd that happens to like old cadillacs

yes, this is exactly what cadillac should do to keep on on the good vibe that has bin going on last years,

this car has class, and is expensive looking.

This is the first new Cadillac I have truly wanted since the Eldorado went out of production.  Finally, a Cadillac without a similar engine to a Camaro, plus outstanding styling!  I hope they build it... with a twin turbo Cadillac exclusive V8. If it gets built, there will once again be a new Cadillac I aspire to own.

To modify a phrase from Nike, "Just BUILD it!"

Here is another article about this car (with a nice slide-show of images):

What a classy looking and gorgeous vehicle! This is the vehicle Cadillac should have been building for the past thirty years or so, before they lost control of their niche! The Elmiraj will be the new American dream-car! The thin chrome strip vertically between the red tail lamp lenses looks awesome! The beveled hood is a classic "coffin nose" and the true hardtop (no post) design is fabulous. The interior looks more luxurious than any contemporary auto interior I've ever seen! Simply beautiful!!! This car would be a "must have," right next to their European ride of choice, for wealthy consumers--a slot that has been absent a Cadillac model for many years. This is the type of car people envision when they think of Cadillac. (Just call it an Eldorado, too!)

Good looking car, lousy name. "Elmiraj" doesn't roll off the tongue and doesn't say anything about the car. It is one of those stupid computer-generated names designed not to offend anybody in any language. Kind of like "Allante" or "Catera".

Their other problem is that they have spent the last 40 years draining their products of any perceived worth or value. They have trained the public that their cars are only to be bought when they are being given away with rebates or cut rate leases. As a result, their import competition has a much greater perceived value. I have heard people say about other luxury cars that "That's too much money for an American car!".

Good luck to them. They are going to need it.

My '08 STS had a 4.6 V8; great engine, very fun car to drive and flog through twisties!

I doubt this car will still be called "Elmiraj" if it makes production. It will likely have the same designation of whatever the new large flag ship sedan is to be (three-letters?). Add a sub-letter/number to designate the coupe and convertible (fingers crossed!). Is the super-charged V8 to be a "V" once again? Sounds good to me!

I've always liked that Cadillacs had names, but I've grown accustomed to the abbreviated monikers on new cars. I don't think badging this car with an Eldorado type derivative name  does it justice nor does it respect the original. But I do have to say, I'll take one in blue just like this concept!! Amazing car!
