Title: Stromberg AAV-25 or AAV-26
Post by: joeceretti on October 23, 2013, 07:21:08 AM
I believe my 38 60S originally had a Stromberg AAV-25, I can get an AAV-26 easily which is correct for 1939. Does anyone know if these two carburetors are interchangeable? Will the linkage fit?

I think I was too quick to ask this question. I should have researched some first.

Stromberg AAV-25,205-2 is correct for the car but was superseded by the Stromberg AAV-26, J5543. Unless I can find one of those exact models I will keep the WD-O, which I think is from a V-16. Now, to find a rebuild kit or a rebuilder around me. Shouldn't be too difficult.

Joe

According to my book... Motor Auto Repair Manual, vintage car edition (1935-53), the Carter WDO 392S for the 1938-39 Cadillac and La Salle, casting # 166 as well as the Stromberg AAV-25  part # A-18672 for the '38 Cadillac, are both correct for those years.
AAV-26 used from 1939 to 1948 but with different part numbers.
WDO cast #s 203, 248, were also used from 1938-40 in both automobiles
So, I would keep the WDO.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Tito, it does help. I have my carb at the rebuilder now.

Joe,

The AAV-25 was correct. It is different from the AAV-26 and it looks different. The AAV-25 had an electric choke.

If you go with the 26 try to find a 1939 or 1940 they have the big screw covers over the jets, the later ones have the small screw covers -- a easy way to tell.

I can send a picture of a restored AAV-25 if interested. They are expensive little buggers, but nothing like the AA-25 off the 1937.

I am interested in all pictures. I can learn quite a bit from a photo. The AAV-25 on the entire line of Cadillacs in 38 had an electric choke EXCEPT on the 60 special. I may be wrong but I am stating this from the wiring diagram. The wire was there for the electric choke on all models, again, except for the 60 special. I think I have a good line on a correct AAV-26. Just waiting on a response.

Once I have the AAV all I need is the correct bracket to mount the air cleaner.  ;D

Joe,

The Master Parts List from 1940 and my experience say otherwise concerning the AAV-25 for the 1938 60 Special.

Group 12.0525, shows:

1938-60, 60S, 65,75    as part # 1425447  (Model A 18672, AAV-25).

Will get a picture and try and find the bracket.

I have a parts book that says 1938 60S AAV-25,A18672,205-2 (Superseded by AAV-26, J5543). It was also listed as superseding the AAV-25,A18352,205-1 used in 1937. I am hopeful that this service book is correct. I suppose I will find out.

As for the WDO in the book I have, it is listed as being on some other cars, Buick for example, but with a different linkage number. The actual I have WDO is from A 1938 V16. The linkage doesn't look to be messed around with, as far as I can tell. No cut or bent parts. The clamp for the choke however is home made. Anything can happen to these cars over this many years.

I really appreciate the help, it feels great to learn this. I intend to pass this knowledge along to others in the future.

Joe,

Cadillac often did this. The AA-25 and AAV-25 were not the best carbs built so they stopped making them and said use the AAV-26. Is it original, no,  it is a replacement part.

Nothing wrong with changing to a AAV-26 it is a good dependable carb. If you go with a later one, that has the port for the vacuum advance then you might want to change out the distributor to one with the vacuum advance. Mush better ride with the conversion.

In my effort for authenticity and dependability I found the exact model listed as the replacement. Partly because I couldn't find the right AAV-25 but it sounds like it's a good thing to switch to AAV-26.
