Title: Slip yoke on 38 LaSalle vs Cadillac
Post by: joeceretti on March 13, 2014, 09:56:37 PM
This slip yoke is installed toward the front of my car. I have seen, tonight, a photo of a slip yoke on a 38 LaSalle with the slip yoke installed toward the rear. Does anyone know if this is the way it was or which orientation the slip yoke would have been when new on both the Cadillac and the LaSalle?

The instructions for this in 1940 are in the Manufacturing Information book for that year.  Slip joint for 40-50, 52, and 62 is at the transmission.  All others models are at the axle.  Since the 38-60S is the same basic chassis as 40 I would say is at the axle.

What is the Manufacturing Information book and where do you get them? This is one I have not heard of!

Back in the 80's I got two rolls of 35mm microfilm from Cadillac when I ordered the invoice for my 39-9033.  On the microfilm were the owner's manual, data book, etc. all common stuff but in addition it had the 1940 Manufacturing information.  I had to go to the library to read it but it was really interesting.  It is the instruction from the engineers to the factory floor on how the car should be put together.  Sometimes it references drawings so that is missing but it is quite helpful.  If you really want to get in to detail it gives all the color coding on parts such as orange ring on the driveshaft for my 40-60S.  I finally got tired of going to the library and printing a few sheets so I had it copied to paper.  This was before the computer revolution.  In paper form it is about 200 pages printed on both sides.  I have made some additional copies through the years and if anyone wants one it is $40 including shipping.  My email is brad@ipsengarage.com.  It was written for 1940 but much of it applies to 39 and 41 plus there were some additional pages that covered 1946.

The book is invaluable for those looking to gain an understanding into the thought process of the original engineers. How they thought things should be. It would be nice to have some of the missing diagrams, but, it is what it is. I recommend all who own these cars buy Brad out of his supply now.

If the microfilm could be transferred to pdf file directly, I'll be interested in purchasing. Many companies offers this service.

I would like a paper copy and a PDF version later if they become available. Private email sent.

Hello Brad

I appreciate your initiative and unselfishness.  I too would like to purchase a paper and PDF copy for my LaSalle. I'm sure it would be beneficial to many prewar Cadillac owners.
