Title: 1962 Eldorado top boot
Post by: maitairon on July 13, 2015, 02:14:18 PM
I need to find out if the original convertible top boot was leather or vinyl and did the snaps show, or were they hidden? I would really appreciate any help I can get with this. Thanks. Ron

Outside of maybe a Rolls I have never heard of genuine leather being used for a top boot.

1. It would add a significant cost to each vehicle.
2. It would have to be cut from a single hide, which would limit the number of hides that would be be available. (or it would require seams which would be unsightly.
3. Most important leather has a bad habit of shrinking. . . . Especially when put away wet. Which is exactly what would happen when you put the top back up after a summer shower.

Even during the Classic Era they used canvas top boots. They were considered utilitarian, not aesthetic.

Thank you for your help. Leather didn't make much sense and that's what mine was and yes it has shrunk!   Ron

Hi Eric and Steven.  Thank you both very much. SMS said they can have it made correctly, so I ordered it from them.
Thanks again.  Ron
