Title: Correct air cleaner for a 1956 Cadillac?
Post by: carguyblack on February 28, 2016, 12:29:51 PM
I know this style was used on many years General Motors cars in the 50's but Iwonder if I have the specific one for a 1956 Cadillac. I wanted to change over to a paper element but the ones suggested on the forum are much too tall because of the restriction caused by the center assembly in the photo.
Can anyone tell me what's up and if I have the correct air cleaner top half?
Thanks,
Chuck

Chuck,

Something ain't right. That piece should not be attached to the top of the air cleaner housing. Is it, perchance, just stuck? The piece should be part of the carburetor muffler/flame arrestor.

Nope, it is attached by small spot welds every 3 inches or so around the edge. Is this piece supposed to be attached to the base part of the oil bath or is it a 3rd section separate altogether? This is weird! This was on the car when I got it, but the oil bath base portion was missing. Wonder if my top is from an Olds or a Buick?

Chuck,

Not a 56 Cad unit.

Will send picture of the original one if it will help.
