Title: verify matching numbers
Post by: caddylover on November 05, 2016, 05:51:46 PM
Hello Everyone. I am brand new to this site and need some help. I will be looking at a 1965 coupe soon and need to know how to verify that the engine is original to the car. I am assuming the VIN tag is on the drivers door. Not sure where on the block the numbers are located? Your help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome aboard. If you're not already a member, there's great benefit to joining the club.

The engine number is located on a flat surface of the engine block in the valley just above the transmission bell housing. It should be the same as the Vin number on the passenger side chassis rail a bit forward of the alternator location. The correct number should be "J51xxxxx"

Thanks Ralph. Sounds like the one in the valley area will be hard to see but now I know where to look! Many Thanks.
I am definitely considering membership I guess it depends on how deep I get into the Caddy's!! I currently have a 72 Nova that has been my focus but that could change.

I needed the Allied Vaughn build sheet to verify my '65.  The VIN and engine serial number were listed on the build sheet in different columns and both matched my car, but the number were not the same.   However, I am looking at the number under the drivers side head by firewall.  Chuck

Hi Chas,

The number below the driver side head is the Engine Unit Number. It designates the sequence in which the engine was assembled which is not necessarily the same as vehicle assembly. It is used to track components used in, or running changes to the assembly.
