Title: 511 Inch "optional" motor-Finally done-waiting for cool weather
Post by: "Cadillac Kid" Greg Surfas 15364 on June 12, 2017, 03:41:02 PM
Finally,
Monster Maradyne fans, 3100 RPM Converter, 1100CFM "Troy Paterson" clone (with warm up activation) of course the tiny roller cam, MSD ignition running off a DUI gutted distributor. To damn hot here to make a trip to the strip worth while, but after all this time what is another couple of months (till September)?

That Bad Boy sounds strong! Love the way it cackles the instant you hit the loud pedal. I see you started to shave some weight off, starting with gutting the dash!..    LOL!!

Looks good, sounds great!  I keep thumbing through the Self Starter looking for that write up, based on your upgrades, you'll have to update the article.

Is 511 .060 over?

Were you shooting for the fall to run it or did it take longer than you thought to get it together (spring got missed)?  Hate to see that you have to wait 4 months when it just got put back together.  I bet your neighbors love you!

chris.

Chris,
A couple of other projects and some traveling took care of Spring here.  I am still waiting on Steve Stewart of the Self starter to select a few of the pictures I sent him. The article is written.

Chas,
The dash insert, all the heating and air conditioning the rear seat, the front bumper and a bit all over. Down to a "svelte" 4850 pounds. From 5200

"The KID" is the MAN ! Go kid , GO ! Chris I think a 511 is .040 over. .050 put a 514 in my '71. It has a stock '74 HEI , and barks like a Great Dane when it lights up through a brace of balanced Flowmasters. I do like messin' with the occasional Cad. My next incarnation wants to come back as the KARMiC Kid. Or maybe Porfirio Rubirosa without the Fatal Ferrari.  - CC

.........an old "Mooneyes" gas pedal! Gotta love it!!! A 47 year old car with 57 year old accessories. Waiting for the Lexan windows and aluminum door panels and trans tunnel. Gas tank and trunk floor gone, replaced by a 10 gallon fuel cell......there's another 350 pound diet! What gear are you gonna run?

But, you want the weight at the rear.

Not always in my experience. Setting the rear end preload will have a dramatic affect on the car.

Jeepers,
That's part of the PFM that seems to be inherent in the rear suspension as designed by Cadillac.  Only modifications (Moser 9 inch was set up with stock Cadillac trialing arm brackets)  are a rear sway bar and air shocks.  With all that weight my best "60'" has been 1.8 seconds pulling just about 1.5 G's.

"Kid".........do you run that Moser at a stock pinion angle?.........or adjust it down a few degrees when at rest?

"1.8" 60 footers is holding you back a bit.... a lot....  8)

Back in the early 90's, I set up a little Datsun 1200 for street/strip work. I was lucky, as they are a cart spring set-up and easy to work with.
Even using a small, 13 x 6 street tyre, we ran a 1.58 in the 60's at will. (10:61 @ 130 MPH was its best)

Later on, I ran a 60 foot time of 1.08 in a blown car (34 Ford 3 window coupe) 7:60 @ 174 MPH set up with a 4 link rear end.
Later on, i ran a 60 foot time of 1.02 in a blown car (37 Fiat Topolino)  ... wild times in those days 7:43 @ 180 MPH with a solid rear end.

Unfortunately, I've not ever set up anything like what you have.
There was guy, however,  at Hot Rod Drag Week last year in a 69 CDV running 10.1's or thereabouts. Could be worth hunting him down and asking some questions on his set up.

From memory, he was on the Yellow Bullet forum.

Cheers, Kev

Boy, you fellas are lucky.   When I was racing, 1979 to 1989, my strip never was set up for 60 foot times.   Just reaction and finish line times.   But, I still got my carburetored dragster to 150 MPH.

Just for conversation's sake, at my weight a 1.5 second 60 ft would take something like 725 HP to the ground. I'm just  NA, and "on the motor"

Yeah, you're correct in that part of it. I hadn't allowed for the weight difference.

Have you thought about going on the bottle?
