Title: Transferring California YOM plates??
Post by: Bob Hoffmann CLC#96 on December 09, 2017, 07:01:48 PM
Guys,
Please read carefully. Has anyone here in CALIFORNIA recently transferred a set of on file YOM plates from one car to another?? Same year cars of course but different owners.  Please contact me directly at bobscads@comcast.net.
Thanks, Bob

Bob:

Have you tried calling DMV to get the lowdown on this?  Maybe I’ve been lucky, but when I’ve called them with old car questions, they’ve been pretty helpful.

+1 on calling the DMV.  They'll tell you what to do.

I'd recommend them over our shady advice.

Use reg form 352 - Reassignment of a YOM to an eligible vehicle.
This will work to move a plate from YOUR 1938 sedan to YOUR 1938 coupe.  However you used the phrase "different owners". . . .

1. Both vehicles must be currently registered.
2. Current OWNER of the YOM must 'release interest' in the YOM. They are then free to put standard issue plates on the car that HAD the YOM. (actually you will HAVE TO buy new standard issue plates for the car that had the YOM) $$$
3. The NEW OWNER of the YOM can then release his standard plate and have the YOM assigned to his car. $$$

Because of the necessary signatures on the several forms that involve two people, they should BOTH be at the DMV and both be prepared to pay a lot of (needless but required) fees.

I'm not Bob, but I'll answer.

Year of Manufacture.

I have '70 license plates on my '70.  It's fairly common thing to do here.

Recently, I went through many hoops with the State of Washington (for those few Washingtonians out there). Washington allows a vintage plate to be used, providing the YOM corresponds with the year of the license plate (or tab).

Just for the record, in Washington during the 50's the plates were an odd size (longer, narrower) and do not fit the standard 1957 license holder. This discovery came after spending $125 on a '57 vintage plate. I'd love to sell it!!!

I got my YOM plates from a retailer online, so my information probably won't help that much.  I just wanted to add that I had to first buy current plates for the state of CA and then register my YOM plates.  It was probably three trips to the DMV but if you make an appointment in advance, you don't have to wait long.
