Title: WHERE IS THE HEAT RISER ON THE 56 CADILLAC 365?
Post by: jaxops on August 07, 2018, 04:24:28 PM
I have looked and looked.  Not sure where it is.  Could it be inside the exhaust manifold?  I think it is stuck as the car is heating up very quickly at idle.  I don't want to start pulling the engine apart until I know where it is.  The book says driver side exhaust manifold.  Club members told me it's on the right manifold.  Nothing is sticking out so what am I missing?

Thanks in advance!

If you follow the driver's side exhaust manifold pipe
down to where it connects to the exhaust, it should
be there.  If not, it likely was removed by a previous
owner.  This was sometimes done when replacing the
exhaust system if the valve was broken or because
some people (who don't properly maintain them) find
the heat riser troublesome.

If you can't find it, I would suggest looking elsewhere
for your overheating issue.

Mark,

Could you be more specific on your particular issue with “is heating up very quickly at idle”?

Are you referring to engine cooling temperature, or the overall engine ambient temperature?   ???

You are aware the intake manifold has the exhaust crossover paths between the right and left bank which goes over were the carburetor mounts to help on cold start up? This area gets real hot especially at the ends and around were the intake manifold bolts at the heads.

Some folks tend to block these ports to keep the top a bit cooler and in most cases there is no need for this unless you drive your car in extremely cold weather. This is also one of the reasons folks tend to remove the heat riser, if it gets stuck close you can have serious problems since the left side exhaust only path to go out is via the crossover and out on the right hand side. :(

As for your question on the heat riser, I second Mike’s comment above, it should be on the left side exhaust manifold it would/should be mounted between it and the exhaust pipe flange.

If your issue is with the engine cooling temperature again as Mike’s suggest you may need to do some detective investigation work.   ;)

Good luck..!

Thanks all.  "Ding-dong" the riser is dead.  Yes I knew the crossovers were still in effect.  Not sure how to go about blocking them.  That might be an issue for another round.

Fusick sells these risers. And they also sell the eliminator spacer if you dont want the heat riser anymore
