Does anyone have any experience in what fails on these systems electronically. Are there any commonly failing components or culprits to look for ?

Capacitors and the two adjustment potentiometers typically.  John Oldenburg in Galena, IL is a master at rebuilding these.  He also calibrates for modern street lighting - did mine and it worked flawlessly.
