Title: Air Cleaner
Post by: #1CaddyFan on March 20, 2020, 03:36:47 PM
Hi All,
I am searching for an air cleaner for a 58, 365 engine with a Carter car. It's going in a 56 coupe. Thanks.

I have one but not parting with it.   My car is a 4 bbl but I changed to 3x2.   So it goes with the car, should I sell.   I found one out in a junk yard(Oregon?) a few years ago, and he wanted way too much($325?).   So look around a bit.   Other makes/period ones on ebay, etc. all the time.   The idiot who put the edelbrock on my car, butchered the stock air cleaner, so I had to come up with one.
These really are a fairly standard size based on the carb diameter.   For instance an Olds/Buick will work but the snorkle may point in a different direction.   So you need to decide if the '58 snorkle position will work with your '56, not just because of the motor.
(I'm going from memory, if you used the correct '58 Carter 2306(?), I think they're 3 3/4" bowl diam vs 4 1/4" newer.   eg: if you used a modern "carter" carb, like an edelbrock, it won't fit.   There's some adaptors(hard to find) but since have to increase, they raise the height.)   Frankly, I would use the stock '58 carter.   I'd put something more up to date, w/o vacuum idle.
Since it's already a modified, I'd just put an nice open filter chrome one on it, or snazzy aluminum.   Cheaper, better, better looking.   Rat rodders will use anything.   I've seen outboard cowlings, you name it, etc

These re-pops are pretty nice. Might not be as massive at 7/8 scale I believe, measurements are in ad...
Fits 5-1/8" carb neck (most Holley, Quadrajet, Demon and Edelbrock carbs)
Might need an adapter to get you to WCFB carb top?

I like the paper filter!
It might not pass in your concours car event but is a winner on a driver...

Think I have a spare top and matching bottom from a '56, (but missing mesh filter inside). Looks like the one in the photo. You would therefore have to use it with a new paper filter. Someone years ago had it chrome plated, which you could clean up or paint it black (and order the AC oil bath sticker for it). Send me a PM if interested. Clay/Lexi

Edit: May have a metal mesh filter but would have to look for it, to keep it oil bath correct if that is what you prefer. Otherwise you could use without the oil bath mesh filter and use a disposable paper filter inside instead. I believe '56 was the last year for this style of air cleaner shroud, as pictured, for Cadillac.

'58 will be a paper filter and '56 is oil bath.
