Title: 41 Ash Tray Cover Sliders
Post by: Chris Davis on April 23, 2020, 11:17:11 AM
Any suggestions on replacements (home made or otherwise) for the bakelite tambour sliding covers used in the rear seat "smoking compartments" for Series 60S, 61, 62 and 63?  The originals are a brown bakelite material glued to a cotton denim type cloth

The $100 plus versions from the usual specialty suppliers use a vinyl floor mat material glued to a strip of metal shim stock.  The problem is this doesn't work as the metal strip bows and the vinyl lifts/peels when the slider is in the pulled to the closed position around the curved track in the casting.

Hi Chris, eBay or Hemmings are your best bet. They are as rare as hens teeth though.

Chris, You might consider taking apart some later model (1953) chromed ones and paint them brown. I have at least one (I think) and when it warms up enough to mow I'll check while I'm in the garage and see how many I have. (If any.)
