Title: 56 how to remove hood emblem insert, what colors for hubcap emblem details?
Post by: Hillbillycat on July 07, 2020, 01:55:10 PM
Hi,

how to remove the plastic hood emblem insert without damage?
Mine is loose on the sides already and I fear loosing it. Removing it will maybe give me a chance to touch up the faded paint on the insert before securing it back.

What detailing color is used for the fine horziontal lines on the hubcap emblems ´56 SdV? Blue or black?
It looks like these fine stripes are blue on mine whereas the repro ones look like they have a black line.

I got inspired by a recent post I saw someone doing a superb touchup on his 1970 hubcaps. Got some 1-Shot paint left from my bro´s pinstriping his guitars so I wanna give my ´56 hubcaps and hood emblem a try.

I believe you are referring to the boxes that should be alternating blue and white stripes, the first line is blue.

Hi, yes I do. Thank you.
Anyone with a hint on how to remove the hood emblem insert while it´s still on the car?

I’m afraid it’s best to remove the assembly as least risk of breaking the plastic. It the emblem is aftermarket there  is no consistency as to the adhesive or quantity used.

Well, both the assembly and plastic insert are still the original parts. The plastic insert has a lot of hair cracks. Sounds like it´s best if I just leave it alone before breaking it and live with the slightly faded colors. I´ll secure it with glue and a syringe on the edges then to keep it from falling off.

If you attempt to remove the plastic crest from
the metal "V" the colors will be lost.  They are
painted on the back and the glue will break all
of the painted surfaces when you do that.

However, there are reproduction crest inserts if
you are looking for authenticity:

You can't. The plastic emblem has 2 tabs at the rear; a steel clip is securing the tabs to the pot metal frame. The whole assembly is attached to the hood with 2 maybe 3 nuts, I don't remember. If you open the hood you can see the nuts if you have a light torch.

Thanks for clarification. I´ll really leave it like it is then.

Polished one hubcap center emblem last night. Looks so much better with the polished brass. I´ll have to do the remaining ones before painting. Need to mix the 1 Shot paint to get them all the same color (fire-red seems too bright so I´ll darken with black).
