Title: 1940 Cadillac Limo
Post by: Weetus on January 12, 2021, 03:07:32 PM
Hi All,

I have an old caddy that I need to sell and am looking for some feedback and taking offers before it goes on eBay. From researching the number plates it’s a 1940 Limo (40-7559). This car was somehow acquired by my uncle a long time ago but is basically now abandoned on a friend’s property and needs to go. I’m positive my uncle never actually owned the car (probably traded a friend some other old car for it), and I checked online but the license plate doesn’t show up in the DMV records. There is no engine, but the interior seems to be in pretty good shape.

I’m not 100% sure of the process in selling a barn find like this, but there is no pink slip so paperwork and reg is the responsibility of the buyer. It has to be sold asap, and I’ll put it one eBay shortly if nobody here is interested.  Any input is appreciated and I’ll entertain all offers. The car is located in the East Bay, Northern California and buyer has to arrange pickup/towing.

Happy to answer any questions. Link to photo album below.

Thanks,
Kevin

This is a formal sedan and Cadillac made just 48 of these in 1940...

It looks like it spent one too many decades outside but it isn't all smashed up....lots of decent parts there...

Good luck Kevin with the sale....I wish I was closer, because I'm looking at some parts I could use right now....

That car is way too rare to be parted out at this time. To sell it correctly, it needs to be put inside & a title generated. I can make suggestions privately. Bobscads@comcast.net, Can anyone read the body #?.

I suppose that there aren't many left?   But, bringing one back to life will lessen the value of those that remain.

It's a little one owner car...

Not for the faint of heart.

It doesn't look like a parts car to me.

In it's day it must have been an impressive car....

The owner in the back seat would have had a hand held microphone that he used to talk to the driver when the divider window was up.....you can see the speaker over the drivers head on his side of the glass....

The exterior top must have been all leather....all black car.....no side mounts on this one, I think that's unusual....

It must have been something to see...

A real sight for sore eyes, and deep pockets. I hail anyone taking this on, as you are definitely a better man than I. I've learned my lessons the hard way. No disrespect, just a reality check.

Thanks for chiming in, everyone. That's really cool about the intercom between the driver and passenger. The divider window still rolls up and down!

I believe it is body #13. I realize that the right way to sell it is to get a title, but nobody here has the time, patience or money to do all that, much less restore it. It really just has to move.

It sounds like this is a pretty intimidating project, even for the hardcore Caddy guys:) Looks like I'll be throwing it up on eBay with no reserve tomorrow morning.

Thx,
Kevin

Kevin, Give us the link when you put it on ebay. The excitement of a no reserve auction can be a good motivator. Good Luck,    Harry

Probably stopped by the seller before the Auction ended, as he probably thought it was Gold.   So, relist.

Bruce,
According to the ad, it ran its course with a winning Bid. The new owner backed out that quick? Without even a few days to ponder what he was getting into before he bid on it? You're logic is spot on, but that "Gold" theory will usually backfire because either you scare people away, or now they want it even cheaper because they figure something's fishy.....

Apparently, the "final" bidder on the initial listing did not come through, so CLC members, you've got another chance at this one.  It has so much style and possibilities... hoping it goes to a really good home and someone who can patiently persevere and bring this elegant beauty back to life.  James

I see a lot of cars on eBay that sold and then they are quickly re-listed. My bet is the winning bidder backed out.

My own Eldorado was the subject of an eBay listing, and was relisted when the winning bidder didn't want to go through with the deal, but that was after he saw it in person.   And I can't say I blame him.

It ended up being relisted another two times, not meeting the reserve, and I purchased it on the fourth attempt, still after it didn't meet the reserve.

And usually the next course of action is to offer the next one or two bidders a second chance offer. With that many Supposed bids, someone down the line would snap it up. Hey, if you can get it for a few bucks less, then that would be a deal for the buyer, and a win-win for the seller of not re-listing it again, by securing a legitimate bona-fide buyer......

James,
My hat's off to you regarding your optimism, not only in these financially trying times, but also taking into consideration the decline in value of this era vehicle. I know the experience of loss first hand with the '47 Convertible Coupe.

With my case, I had conversed with the seller, and was told what the reserve was, and therefore I could bid up to just below the reserve, and be the highest bidder.   He knew I wanted the car, and wasn't going to remove it from the Auction, which was fair enough for him.

BUT, I was prepared to go higher to get it, as this was the first one I had seen with all the options that I was looing for, as in Track Master brakes.
