Title: 70's Chevy steering pump for 75 Eldorado?
Post by: Steve Lomas on December 30, 2023, 10:49:45 AM

I replaced my power steering pump about 20k miles ago and it's failing- making noise and vibration.

Probably because I bent the pulley taking it off last time, that and I had the belt over tight to stop the AC squealing.

So I'd like to replace the pulley also this time but I'm not seeing the whole assembly (for a reasonable price.)

I do see a lot of Chevy/ Saginaw style full assemblies like this

(Chrome gets you home  :)  )

The bolt pattern looks the same but not sure if it will align the belt properly, or if it provides the same pressure etc.

Any thoughts appreciated.

You're lucky you got 20K. All the replacement parts are junk. Just go to RockAuto or Summit Racing and get the correct
one for your car. Maybe get 2, they're not expensive. You'll need another one again.

Thanks, yeh, considering the wobbly pulley it hung in a while.

I see Rock Auto sells a pulley separately so I'll probably do that.

One matter to remember is that anything that has to contain fluids, or maintain friction
should never be chromed.

With the Chroming of the oil reservoir housing, the seal will have a hard time maintaining
fluid within the pump, and the plating of the "V" of the pulley will result in slippage of
the belt under stress.

Plus, Chromed pieces that contain fluids maintain heat as against painted parts.
One reason not to chrome Sumps.
