Wanted 1949 Cadillac starter for original 331 with automatic.
This is a rare starter being one year only, but the working parts are not one year. It is basically the same as a flathead starter. Only the nose piece is different to account for a different orientation of the starter case. The only wear part in that is one bushing which can be replaced if required. So bottom line with a good flathead starter you can replace the flat head nose piece with your 49 one and you are good to go. The solenoid is also different but the same. The orientation is different but if you have a good 49 case you can move the relay parts over to the 49 one. On first thought you would think you could replace it with a 50 starter but that is not the case without changing all of the wiring in the car. The 50 has no relay on the solenoid. A #8 wire is run directly through the ignition switch and to the starter solenoid.
