Title: Cadillacs in movies.
Post by: Barry M Wheeler #2189 on May 02, 2024, 10:37:32 PM
I just checked TCM for 8:00 PM tomorrow evening EDT. Steve Martin (I believe) drives a 1941 Cadillac 60S in "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid."

For a brief moment a 1941 Convertible Couple is in a couple scenes in Oppenheimer.
It happens to look very much like my car.
I happen to see the movie car at Disney's Dapper day expo and they let me sit it in.
Coincidentally the cars for sale.

Oppy really did have a couple of convertible Cadillacs.
I recommend the new book on him.
The man had class and brains.

What is Disney's Dapper day expo.
Would you give us the scoop.
Sounds interesting - especially anything Disney.

Have fun,

1941 Series 62 convertible sedan driven by the main character in Bugsy (1991). I heard the car was repainted this color for the film because of better visibility in night time scenes.

My black 1955 Series 62 sedan had the privilege of appearing in "Oppenheimer" twice, as Robert Downey Jr.'s "character car".

In early 2022 a call went out via the SoCal CLC branch for a 1953 sedan. I was told they couldn't find one (go figure), and the search was expanded to include 1954-55 models.

My black '55 was chosen, and appears twice in the movie. Once at 1:03:18, in black and white, with Downey Jr (as "Strauss") in the back seat; and again at 2:23:51, in color, when Strauss tells Oppenheimer "Take my car, I insist", and Oppenheimer gets in the left rear door. The next scene continues the story, with Oppenheimer riding in the back seat.

My car isn't seen very clearly or for very long, possibly because it's too new a model to be in those scenes. But when Oppenheimer is riding in the back seat, you can look to the left side of the center of the frame, above his shoulder, and see the red glow of the taillamp up above the rear fender – not possible with pre-1954 models. There's not enough visual evidence to prove it's mine, but I do have the canceled checks.

My '55 also appeared in season 2, episode 9 of "The Afterparty" on AppleTV, where it's quite visible.

Both were experiences were a lot of fun, especially when "Oppenheimer" was awarded the Oscar for Best Picture!

Maybe Porsche?

Dapper Day is a specific date Fall and Spring at the Disney Parks.  Where people dress dapper as in dressing like the old times.  Or go Disneybounding.  Sort of cosplaying their favorite Disney characters.  The Expos was Spring and Fall.  But now it's just Spring.  At the Expo you can purchase Dapper Clothing and bits.  Usually there is live music and dancing and usually they have a fancy car.  Most likely a Cadillac.

It's good time.  Check dapperday.com for more info

"Undercover Brother." The lead actor, Eddie Griffin, drives a 1970 DeVille Convertible.

There's a cheesy scene in the beginning with some special effects where he does a 360 in the car and doesn't spill a drop of his Big Gulp.

I am sure that many members already know about this, but I think they have done an incredible job of cataloging Cars in Movies at this site:

IMCDB - Cadillacs (https://www.imcdb.org/vehicles_make-Cadillac.html)

This makes it incredibly easy to find movies with a specific year or model car - even some pretty obscure titles (or in my case, a pretty obscure vehicle - 1942 Series 67)

Watching the movie Matinee with John Goodman.

Seeing the 59 convertible he drives into town in. They actually do a crash scene with this car. I dont know if they crashed the real car. But since this was 93 they may have sacrificed it.

I have been watching some early 80's TV shows like the A-Team.  Seems like just about every episode that takes place in the USA at least the bad guys have some sort of Cadillac limo that gets destroyed somehow by the end of the episode.  Most of them look to be in the 75-80 range which makes sense since those would be old and common enough that they could buy them cheap enough to just wreck em.

I suppose in some ways its the same thing now, lots of the bad guys drive Escalades so Cadillac is still a player?  If it wasn't for the Escalade would most people even have heard of the brand?

In the old CLC Mid-Century Cadillac chapter Forum, we had an ongoing thread on Cadillacs in the movies. Myself and Phil Whyte were significant contributors. Even moderator and adminstrator Lou Commisso would occasionally get involved. Good old days. Wish it were possible to move that information here. But we still have that Cadillac movie data base on the net. Clay/Lexi

Yes, my memory isn't what it was! I saw a great film noir about a gold robbery and to get the gold out of the city they melt it down and mould bumpers etc for a couple of 53 Cadillacs and chrome the gold. For the life of me I can't remember the name of it! Phil

There is a movie that I can never remember the name to.

A family moves into an old mansion/ funeral home that was owned by a magician/ actor of the past. The house had been filled with squatter punks.

The magicians ghost and (girlfriend?) Possess people and sometimes help sometimes hurt the family. The brother and sister get a 1961 hearse going and have a chase sequence with the punks.

I remember the movie just for the car. I cannot remember the actual movie name.

But there is another 1961 hearse in the movie Monster Squad.

Post by: Lexi on March 03, 2025, 02:54:01 PM
Despite being a huge horror movie fan, I am not sure what film that would be. Yes, Monster Squad did have a skeg in it, but I am drawing a blank for this other one. The first Phantasm film featured a good Hearse chase, but as I recall that was not a skeg and involved a funeral home, and not a mansion with squatters. Perhaps one of the other Phantasm films would fit the bill? Can't recall. Any idea when you first saw this movie? Might help if we had a time frame and a cut off date in which to scour our "brainssss" for an answer to your question. Could it have been a TV show episode and not a movie? Clay/Lexi

And I assume that it was a horror movie that featured this '61 Hearse? If not horror, my mind's macabre movie data bank will exponentially fail to find a match. Clay/Lexi

Never seen that one. There are so many horror flicks out there, tons of them under my radar, especially low budget films. Everytime I go to the specialty video store I am shocked as to how many are there that I am unfamiliar with. Best Cadillac Hearse chase scene in a movie that I can think of is Arnie when he is driving the Hearse while trying to evade the Terminatrix, in Terminator 3: The Rise of the Machines. Best part was when he busted through the mausoleum's stained glass window while carrying a bronze coffin on his shoulder with a mini-gun. Then he loaded up the Cadillac Hearse to make his escape from the authorities and later the Terminatrix. Clay/Lexi

My 1956 Series 75 Limousine, along with my buddies 1957 Series 75 Limo, as well as an unidentified early '50s Hearse made it into Hollywoodland, which starred Adrien Brody and Ben Affleck. This scene was shot at the Necropolis, an ancient cemetery in Toronto. The cemetery scene was a little reminescent of that from the Godfather. Lots of Cadillac, as well as other vintage classic-car eye-candy, in this period piece. Clay/Lexi

I've meant to mention this for some time, but a very, very, VERY rare 1942 Series 62 fast back coupe was in the first few minutes of the Joan Crawford movie, "Mildred Pierce." It was Dark Grey over Light Grey. Not something you'd see going down the street every day even in 1942.

And I managed to catch the '41 60S in "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" the other evening on TCM.

And speaking of that, being a former "700 Fussy Tailor," live men shouldn't either, unless it's quite muted.
