Have to rebuild the trans(TH400) but need the rear main seal. Apparently it has the rope style seal but I'm looking for the 2 piece rubber or plastic updated rear main seal. Can anyone direct me to where I can find this part? I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
I didn't think it was available outside of the full engine gasket sets but these people have it.

The full sets are not that expensive, it doesn't take many individual parts to hit the cost of the full set so may not be a bad idea to get the full set so you have pretty much everything since its all the same age and condition.

These folks have been around a long time. I would go with the complete set too.
This is one of those, "While I'm at it", jobs.
Real seal? Oil pan and front cover gasket too.
Great chance to get rid of the plastic timing sprocket, it's out a looking at you. Cloyes is the way to go for parts.
You can get the Mhale seal at Rock Auto

Isn't the ElDorado's transmission a TH425 or 450?
TH425.

That's what I thought, but if its an Engine main seal, TH400 or TH425 doesn't matter.

Definitely not.

It doesn't matter what transmission is behind (or beside) the engine. In the Eldorado, it's best that the entire thing come out as a unit. Trying to separate them in the car and then put them back together is a 3-4 person job.
I believe the transmission model only came up because it was stated as a THM400 in the original post/question for some reason. I was going to bring it up too but decided since it really didn't matter related to the question it didn't matter that much.
Forty-two miles? :o
I have pulled (and later replaced) first the
engine, then the TH425 with final drive a few

As have I. Must be a Bruce thing.
One day I had the Engine out and back in in 8 hours, including separating the Trans, Putting the engine on the Engine Stand, and dropping the Sump of the engine to remove the Timing Cover to swap over the Cam Gear bolts with the Oil Pump Pickup and putting it back together. When I initially started it up, after replacing the Timing gear and cleaning out the Oil Pump Pickup, there was a horrible knocking from the front of the engine. Turned out to be that I had inadvertently put the Pickup bolts in the end of the Cam, and Vice Versa. The longer bolts went in too deep, and the threads hit on the block casting, causing the cam to bounce forwards each crankshaft revolution. The noise was sickening.

PS. Couldn't do it now. :(
