Title: 1957 Eldorado Brougham
Post by: PerryB on August 24, 2024, 10:23:57 PM
I have my car listed on ebay, the auction ends Aug 31.   Here's a link for more pictures and the description from the listing:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/145967141327/

1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham, number 213 of 400 made.   This is an excellent driver quality car that needs paint.  The car was repainted many years ago in the original Copenhagen Blue and is now showing a lot of wear.   I have done a few touch-ups to keep it from worsening and then polished it all out as is.

Some EB specific parts are missing, most significant are the triangular air cleaner housing and the power radio antenna.   The original dual Carter 4bbl carbs are still there but using open element air cleaners.   The radio and speaker do work, but get mostly static without the antenna.  Note that the speaker is missing in the pictures but I do have it, along with many other parts.  The location is being used for temp, pressure, and voltage gauges.

The engine was completely rebuilt along with both carbs.  It runs beautifully and starts right up every time with just a touch of the key.  The transmission has also been rebuilt but a small problem remains.  There is a slight hesitation when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear.  It always does shift and smoothly, but just takes an extra second.

These cars include a long list of automotive technology firsts, and perhaps most significant is the air suspension at all four corners, including an onboard compressor (a modern compressor has replaced the original).  Many (most?) of these cars have been at least partially converted to a standard coil spring suspension.   The air suspension is still doing the job at all four corners for number 213!  The air domes will leak down overnight, but no problem at all driving around during the day or on longer trips.

The interior is all original with the seating and headliner materials still looking terrific.   The leather door panels need restoration.

Please do some research if you're interested but not familiar with these cars.  They were built only in 1957 (400 made) and 1958 (304 made) and were designed to be the most sophisticated and luxurious automobile ever, by far - a halo car for Cadillac and GM.  At around $14,000, it was the most expensive automobile ever produced at the time.   Just a few of its remarkable features include the stainless steel roof, no-pillar hardtop sedan design with rear hinged doors at the rear, transistorized radio, memory seats with automatic adjustments for getting in and out, auto locks, tubular X-frame, electric fuel pump (originally inside the tank, now external),  auto opening and closing trunk lid, more.

Tires are new and I just completed a 150-mile round trip with zero issues.

On Aug-22-24 at 07:11:21 PDT, seller added the following information:

Some body work had been done long ago to fix a dent in the driver side rear quarter panel near where the fin starts, and there's another dent further forward in the panel.    I did not mean to imply that ONLY paint was needed...there are other small dings that will have to be worked out also.   Chrome bumpers were replated years ago but they have some flaking happening now.   Please feel free to reach out with any more questions,

Smooth Roads,

Yes, she is not the Belle of the Ball, but still quite the looker.

When I was much younger and had my first exposure to the Eldorado Broughams, I was taken by the S/S roof and how so far ahead of other models of the Cadillacs it was in design and sophisticated accoutrements.

I favor 59 EB's - no secret - however I'm taken aback that the wheel covers on my 59 EB were actually lookalike chromed steel wheels on its Brougham counter part - SURPRISE!

And at the end of the day, I continue to be baffled that the Broughams don't demand higher prices, in view of their design and especially their low production numbers.

Have fun,
Steve B.

Thanks for the nice comment,  Steve.  I agree, they should bring more.   Part of the issue though is the price of restoration.  Parts are silly expensive if they can be found, and all that sophistication means lots of complexity too!
I couldn't believe it when this car became available a few years ago, and located less than an hour from me.  Since then I've addressed all the issues to make her a safe and reliable driver, and I've been driving it!   But I'll never restore it.  I'm in a good place with this one... whether it sells or not, I'm happy :)
