I am doing research for a 1969 eldorado with a factory sunroof. I need to replace the "sun roof" switch and noticed that some reference material show the factory style switch as saying "SUN ROOF OPN/CLS" and others say "POWER ROOF OPN/CLS" im not entirely sure why or how this change happened but I felt it necessary to document...
1. the 1970 sunroof service manual and operating Manuel write "sun roof" on the switch
2. ive come across atleast three 1970 cars with "Power Roof" as the switch
3. I've seen some 1967/68 cars with the switch on the knee bolster
4. does the 1969 switch look identical to 1970 or is the orientation switched similarly to the convertible top switch (which comes either in a left or right orientation for 69/70)
5. the service bulliten in 1969 does state "sunroof" operation. but i do not own it to search...
Quote from: Cadillac Fleetwood on March 31, 2019, 05:31:08 PMThe 1970-only sunroof operating switch came in two varieties: one is labeled "Sun Roof" with "Sun" appearing over "Roof", and the other type is labeled "Power Roof" with "Power" appearing over "Roof". Both toggle from the neutral position to OPN or CLS. Unfortunately, in the past, I gutted these to repair convertible top switches, since the "guts" are the same as what's inside the top switches, and the top switches were not being reproduced back then. I still have the switch faces/toggles. I'll take a photo and post.
Charles Fares
from another post, does anyone know if Charles Fares is still around?

Unfortunately Charles passed away last year if I remember correctly.
Rick
It may be two years now. I sure miss him and his detailed knowledge of these cars. He also had the nicest parts around.
Interesting.
I thought the roofs weren't an option until 1970.
Was this a retrofit by chance, or a really late 69?
Sunroof isn't even mentioned anywhere in the 1970 specs/ordering manuals or in sales literature. I've always understood it to be introduced late in 1970 production. It's difficult to imagine it could have been available in 1969 from the factory.
The sunroofs on my 1977 & 1978 Eldorados are after market installed by American sunroofs in Mich. The cars were shipped from the factory complete less the headliner. The converted vehicle was sent to the dealer. My 1979 Eldorado has a true factory astro roof as they were then called , not to be confused with Lincoln's moon roof

GM outsourced sunroof/astroroof installation to American Sunroof Corporation (ASC) so technically not "aftermarket". The 84/85 Eldorado and 82-85 Riviera convertibles were also done by ASC for GM.
