Title: Old Moog part nos.?
Post by: David Greenburg on September 10, 2024, 04:25:37 PM
A neighbor has inherited an assortment of Cadillac parts from her late father, and I'm trying to help her sort through it. Some are labeled, but many are not, including a bunch of Moog stuff that is probably '55-'60 era.The Moog website does not appear to have any information about obsolete/discontinued parts. Anyone know of a resource or have an old catalog?

Looking at a couple of pictures, the only numbers I've identified so far are K-503 and K-515, Handwriting on boxes  says ball joints.

Run those numbers through the Moog website and see what that turns up. By now, they could be superseded by another number.

Also, type that number into a search on RockAuto.com. A list of its applications may come up.

Moog catalogs copyright 1966 and 1978

K-503 Cadillac 57-60  except series 75,86 Lower ball joint adjustable
K-515 Cadillac 57-60  all includes series 75,86 standard lower ball joint

Adjustable ball joints as the name implies ,can be manually adjusted after installation to take up  for wear.
  Standard are made like factory.

I've never heard of adjustable ball joints, but it must be a nice thing to have when the alignment shop tells you, 'Sorry, we can't line it up, you need new ball joints'.

John - Trying to search these numbers through Moog or Rock Auto is a dead end; numbers have either been superseded or discontinued.

Warren - Thanks for checking your old books. That is interesting about the adjustables. Like John, I don't think I've heard of that.  There is also K-504 (although that box is numbered by hand, unlike the others).  If the hand labelling is accurate, I'm guessing K-504 is the upper joint.  I will need to go see this stuff in person and look at the 503's and see what the difference is.  I'm guessing that one would use the adjustables in pairs; there may only be one based on the pictures I have, although I'm hoping for an in-person visit next week.

You are correct,K-504 is the upper  for all 57-60 Cadillacs.Numbering here a little strange. K-503 is adjustable,But ,K-504 and K-515 are not.
There is no mention in the parts book that Adjustables be used in pairs. I can't see why it would mater.

Moog in this time period had 4 different ways to repair lower ball joint problems. Not all available for every application . For 57-60 Cadillac only the two.
But for 61-69 rear drive Cadillac they also offered a third, the Zeromatic,a self adjusting model. It maintained zero backlash at all times. And was Guaranteed for as long as the customer owned the car.
The fourth type was a repair, not a replacement.  It used the old stud. And  was a plate with the adjusting type plug, that could be used to take up the play. They called it a conversion kit. Not offered for Cadillac.
