Title: 68 DeVille - metal grate in front of windshield, under wipers

Is there an original metal grate that is supposed to go here?  My car has what looks like mesh wire that was painted black.  Does not look original.

Someone previously may have replaced the mesh covering. Most were a wire mesh or plastic mesh. Something has to be there to prevent leaves and debris from getting in there and fouling the evaporator core and wiper transmission.
