Title: 1956 Washer pump rebuild
Post by: 56Fleetwood on October 28, 2024, 12:29:13 PM
Would anyone be able to share any instructions or diagrams for the purpose of rebuilding the washer pump in a '56?

I bought a rebuild kit from McVeys a few years back, and there were no instructions. Carefully took apart the pump and installed all the new parts in same order but results were not great, so I'm wondering what I may have missed. Would like to take the pump apart again and start over.

Thanks

I've rebuilt a couple of mine several years ago, and I documented it with pictures as well on here sometime around February of 2020 if you want to try and do a search for the thread.
Or I can look for it later today, I'm kinda tied up right now with my wife's car again.
Just let me know and I'd be happy to look for it and send you the link.

Ok, I had some time so I looked up my old posts on rebuilding a washer pump for my 56. Here's the links. I found 2 that might be some help to you.

This one you probably wouldn't have found as I titled it for a part I was looking for for the pump.

And this one I found as I was searching through my posts and saw some information on the pumps. https://forums.cadillaclasalle.club/index.php?msg=454360

Hope these will help answer some of your questions.

You can also search for other threads on this topic, there were other threads, I just chose to go through my own posts since I knew I had posted on the pump rebuild I was doing.

Thanks so much for this info Rick! I'm going to sift through all the posts and links and hopefully learn enough from them to try another rebuild.

You're most welcome.  One thing I would like to mention concerning this pump, is instead of using rivets to put it back together with, use the same diameter screws and nuts. The reason is because these are tricky enough to get back together with the multiple pieces and the gaskets as well, and if you have a problem with it, it doesn't want to work, or doesn't work correctly, you can easily take it apart to find where the problem is, and then put it back together again.
If you were to rivet it and then find you have a problem, you have cut or drill the rivets, and you risk damaging the plastic pieces of the pump, and they aren't making any replacement parts for these anymore.
The under-hood heat is hard enough on the pump parts, a lot of the ones I've seen were warped, which basically renders them useless. So if you've got a decent one to start with, don't risk hurting it trying to use rivets.
I know there are some other threads on this pump, it just requires a bit of research to find them. I added the designation of "1950's" to mine today, as I hadn't thought to do so back then. This was hopefully to make it a little easier to find in a search.
There's supposed to be an option to categorize a new post by the decade so if someone is looking for something on a specific year/decade, these are grouped together.
I've gone back and changed some of my old posts for this reason, but I couldn't find the option today that would automatically put it in a given decade, so I just added it to the title.  Not sure if that will actually work like I want it to, but it was worth a try.

So with that long winded explanation, let me just say good luck with your rebuild. I hope it goes well.

Good suggestion re the rivets. Thanks again!
