I get Quora as part of my email. I was about ready to "hang it up" for this morning, when I opened one last item. In 1947, a young woman had thrown herself off the 86th floor of the Empire State building and landed on the roof of the Cadillac limo.
The impact crushed the roof, misaligned both LH doors and door openings, and popped the trunk. I didn't try to take a shot of the photo, but if you also get Quora, you can probably find it. It reminded me of an incident I read way back in the 1940s of another woman landing on a car roof who survived the fall. (She probably wasn't quite as high up.)
What was amazing was the the young lady only appeared to be sleeping on her back and wasn't in too gross a condition to be photographed.
Aftermath always makes the best pictures, Barry!
Barry that sounds like the Evelyn McHale case. There was another one from 1942 and I get the two mixed up, but I think it is the McHale incident. Very sad. Never knew what year of Limo it was, 1940 you say? She had her entire life ahead of her and she ended it in such a tragic, sad way. Clay/Lexi
It was her, and she landed on her backside just to the right of the roof rail and that normally soft tissue had enough force to bend all that curved metal that you'd probably have trouble bending with a sledge hammer. I checked Google and the RH side was even worse. She totaled the car, for certain.
One really wonders what makes a person choose such a drastic step.
