Title: Looking for a Auto Dimming Relay
Post by: _Cap_ on January 04, 2025, 10:14:38 PM
75 Eldorado, currently trying to fit in the auto dimming package into it, have the sensor, the headlight switch accessory, and the floor switch, all im missing is the relay according to the wiring diagram
The relay is definitely weird, at least to me, i cant find anything like it for sale, but then again i don't know much about relays or were to find them, or if there is a specific name for this kind of relay? or anywhere
i might be able to find one?
Doesn't have to be original or even gm, just a relay i can throw under my dash and make the system work for now
thanks in advance

I don't remember thinking that the relay was that special but last time I was looking at a diagram the relay wasn't the issue so maybe I just wasn't looking that close.   Can you post the diagram?  Maybe we can point you to a way to do it.

Ahhh.... I think its still dooable.   Let me see if I can dig up the whole drawing in one of my manuals and see if I can come up with a way to adapt a modern relay.

That looks like door lock relay schematic to me.
Check the lock system schematic to verify whether or not it is the same, but I believe that's what it is.

Wasn't able to find then lock schematic in the 75 or 74 shop manual for some reason. but from what i can find online that looks to be a 6 pin relay from what I can find on later models, i found one for a 75 that was a 5 pin but it had no schematic and was like $130

Caddy Daddy sells a full kit for the auto dimming and the relay they show looks like this, definitely not a relay I've seen, both 74 and 75 manuals just refer to it as a "Power Relay"

UPDATE: was able to find relay that works perfectly with a little bit of rearranging on wires. I bet there are plenty others out there but for my case it needed to have a resistor in it

Found this one at AutoZone for cheap and though it 100% will get changed out, it works pretty good for now

Relay (https://www.autozone.com/powertrain/upshift-relay/p/duralast-relay-19283/953394_0_0)

For me i had to rearrange the wires, hooked all of the main "light switch" wires, the ones mainly marked with light blue, into one of the terminals because in the original relay they all just connected together anyways without running through anything, and i had to make a ground wire to compare the signal from the floor switch to, because the original relay itself was grounded.  overall its a cheap but good for now replacement

Glad you found something that works. What was it made for?

its a widely used upshift sensor, used in some 90s and 2000s cars, maybe past that
Not at all intended for auto dimming, but it works
