I have a solenoid for sale but I don't know if it fits a '49. My parts book only goes up to '42.

Part number is 1118102

My 1935-55 Master Parts List shows the 1118102 solenoid is for 1936 to 1948.  The '49 solenoid is unique to that year and is part number 1118141. The '50 to '52 solenoid, part number 1118148, is different again.

I have heard that you can make the 1118102 work on a '49 starter but that the two wires on the top of the solenoid (one from the ignition key/neutral safety switch, one to ground on the generator) won't line up under the '49 right side exhaust manifold, making access to them with a screwdriver difficult.  Keep in mind that I have no direct experience with this, so you may want to consult someone who has done this.  Bob Schuman who is in the CLC directory in Illinois might know.
