Title: 1957 Pedal and TV adjustment help
Post by: usnfarmall on March 28, 2025, 12:44:30 PM
In the procedure for both it states, "Place a 1/4" drill/rod through the gauging hole in dash relay lever".  Call me dumb but what does this refer to and their locations?

The linkage on the dash panel where the rod comes up from the pedal and pivots to the carb.  There are holes there to stick the drill (0.250) through to zero out the 2 rods.  You will likely have to create slack in the carb rod so you can get the drill through and then start the process.

This is a photo of a 64 throttle relay lever. The hole for the quarter inch drill is lined up. Your relay should be similar to this one.

When I had my first Cadillac, about 40 years ago, I did not understand why this strange operation was needed and always skipped it. Until I had a dash pod which was functioning (you see it on the above picture). The plunger from the dash pod retracts with vacuum; when the engine is not running, the plunger is pushed by a stong spring and open slightly the throttle. However, for some adjustment, the throttle must be completely closed; with a correctly functioning and adjusted dash pod, the insertion of a drill bit is necessary to avoid wrong adjustment.

Wow thanks for update and photos. Damn rain all weekend again so will have to wait. I'm now running an eldelbrock son not much need for the throttle relay but will keep the linkage the same.

Set the Edelbrock up in the same manner as the AFB. They are essentially the same thing. You had to use the throttle and TV rod attaching plate when you changed it over. Most Edelbrocks didn't come with the specific plate that mounts to the side of the throttle actuator.

I also put an Edelbrock on my 57, it is a 650 and I used a 1" spacer under it. It doesn't come with a plate and you can't use the one off the original carb as far as I remember. So, I had to make a custom plate to adapt the TV rod to the Edelbrock carb's throttle linkage. I measured and tried to make the plate so the hole for the TV rod matched exactly where it was on the original carb. I just ran the throttle rod to an existing hole on the Edelbrock. I didn't have to adjust the TV rod much at all.

I cannot wrap my head around this space idea. It seems like the one that fits the original carb works good, but I'm running a 600

I can't remember if it was an alignment issue I had or I just needed more height to use what I needed on the carb without it hitting stuff on the engine but there were a few reasons I didn't use it. My first problem was the original spacer is thin and mine had a crack so I couldn't use it even if I wanted to. Secondly, I wanted the carburetor higher up off the intake to be cooler since the exhaust runs directly underneath it. Shouldn't be a problem if you have intake gaskets that block off the exhaust ports but back when I rebuilt my engine, I did not know about these gaskets and blocked the holes under the carburetor instead.
