Title: Anyone recognize this 81 Fleetwood Brougham? (see pictures)
Post by: chrisbutnut on April 11, 2025, 02:03:37 PM
I'm seriously looking at an 81 Fleetwood Brougham.  I was doing some digging on the history of the car, as the seller said that he didn't have details on the history, or any service records.  The car has 35,000 miles.  I was able to pull a Carfax using the license plate, and was then able to find a Mecum sale in January 2025.

According to Carfax, the car is originally from NY, where it stayed until 2007.  It then went to Texas.  In 2013 it went to North Carolina, then Mississippi in 2017, then back to NC in 2021.

Based on the condition of the car, it has been pampered, and I will most likely purchase it.  I have been searching for either an 80 or 81 Fleetwood, and this is the nicest example I've been able to find.  The seller says that the cylinder deactivation feature is still active.

I'd love to know more about the history, and figured this would be a good place to start.

The following pictures are from the Mecum listing.

Sold at Mecum Kissimmee for $13,750 w/buyer fee ($12,500 hammer price). I know nothing about the car's history but can tell from the pictures the floor mats are aftermarket, the power antenna doesn't work, the wheel covers are correct year but the turbine vaned area should be argent, not black on the standard Brougham.

The A/C compressor had been replaced and the system has been converted to R134a. The air cleaner lid has been painted over and the gold "V8-6-4 Digital Fuel Injection" stenciling that was there originally is gone as 99% of them are.

What it has going for it is the last year of a genuine Cadillac built cast iron V8 engine with THM400 transmission. Color is Sandstone. These are very comfortable and nice driving cars. Make sure to look it over thoroughly before buying.

Thank you, Eric.  I saw the antenna and also the aftermarket floor mats.  I didn't notice the A/C compressor, the hubcaps or the air cleaner lid.  Seller said it has newer tires and the body fillers have been replaced.  It's going to need a headliner, eventually.

Is there anything specific that I should look for?  I'm not mechanically inclined, but can look for the basics.  I'm waiting for undercarriage photos, but am told there is no rust or corrosion.  What I've been able to see so far would support that.

Undercarriage photos.  Looks like it has been undercoated?

Completely normal especially for a northern car. Rarely see without.

Thanks, that's what I figured.  :-)

Are these the correct wheel covers (if I replaced the silver medallion with the correct burgundy medallion)?

Yes but I'd sooner look for the correct ones first.
