Title: 1960 Does this brake set up look right
Post by: 60eldo on April 23, 2025, 07:47:13 PM
This is a pic of my drivers side rear brake set up. The rear of the car is to the right of pic. The manuel shows the star facing the other way.Does my whole set up look correct? Also with both rear wheels off the ground and car in park, why can I spin the wheel. Shouldnt it be locked.

This is what the Left Rear Brake on my old '60 CDV looked like.

The only thing I can see with yours is that the Spring at the top right is crossing over the adjusting rod.   This is caused by the actuating rod being turned over.   The hook attaches to the lever the other way around.

I have added the Left Front to show that it is the same configuration but without the Brake Actuating Bar.

Should also be only one way they install in relation to the access slot on the backing plate. The star wheel either lines up with the access slot or it doesn't. If it doesn't, it's flipped around the wrong way.

Also, while off the ground, there is nothing locking the wheels at the differential. Both wheels will spin, if you're spinning one clockwise you should notice the other spinning the opposite direction. You can't spin both wheels the same direction at the same time, this is when the differential tries to transmit the rotation into the driveshaft which is locked by the transmission.

If you have the optional limited slip differential, both wheels will turn the same direction.

Not sure, Chevrolet had it in 1959.  It would no doubt have been a relatively rare option.

Edit:  Checking on the internet (for whatever that is worth these days), 1961 was the first year Cadillac offered the limited slip option.
