Title: 1960 CdV trunk weatherstrip
Post by: bigoilman on June 22, 2025, 05:16:51 PM
Bought new weatherstrip.  Installed today to let it get it's shape.  Does it get weatherstrip adhesive?  I ask because I see no evidence of old adhesive in there.

I used the yellow adhesive. I think that's what Rubber the Right Way recommended. It's been several years since I did it.

I on the other hand used 3M black super weatherstrip adhesive on my 57. I decided to glue mine in to prevent any chance of leaking into the trunk.

Thanks. Picked up some black 3M this morning.

Before you actually glue it in place, do a trial fit, and see if it holds in place, then close the trunk lid and recheck the alignment of the trunk lid.

The reason I say this is that I replaced the weatherstripping in my '72 Eldorado, and the trunk lid still does not close properly because the rubber replacement is too thick, and putting too much pressure on the lid to allow it to close nicely.   The pictures show just how high the lid has been placed, even after being shut for months.

I am trying to figure out a way to slightly trim some material off the back of the weatherstrip so that the trunk will close nicely, and relieve all the pressure on the hinges and locking mechanism.

I am pretty sure that the replacement rubber is harder with less compressability than the original.  Even though the original was worn out where people had been sliding stuff over the trunk opening, destroying the rubber, it still sealed nicely.

Bruce, thanks for adding that info.  That's exactly what I've run into. Trunk will only latch if SLAMMED and then it's bowed in the middle and a bear to get unlocked.  Not sure what to do about it.

Richard,

With my car, I have been in contact with both Hydro-E-Lectric, the seller of the original weatherstrip, and Metro, the maker of the part, to complain and have been advised that indeed, there is a problem with the one I originally purchased.

They have now agreed that there is a shorter rubber available, and Hydro-E-Lectric are only recommending that one for the '71 to '76 Eldorados.  It is shown as being for up to '70 Models.

I have ordered the replacement, and when it arrives, will fit and report.

PS.   The only reason I cannot send the tall one back is I waited a couple of years before fitting it (like 6) and had cut it to length.   Plus the return postage would not have been worth it.   As it is, the postage for the replacement is nearly 3 times the cost of the new part.

Did they send dimensions for the "correct" version?  Is this what you ordered originally or is this what they're sending you now?

Richard,

Did you check the profile (cross-section) of the replacement strip to that already in the car.

There was a difference in the profiles of 59-60 strips.

Also, [but way less likely, but seen it], the installation of the high point of the strip on the inside or outside of the installation trough.

Have fun,
Steve B.

That is the one that I am getting now.   Should be here in a couple of days.

The one that was too tall was TK 46-E/18.

Well, it appears that my issues were all self-inflicted.
Main issue: I put it in backward.  Pulled it all out, started over and (when oriented correctly) it sat deeper in the channel and the trunk closed properly.

Congratulations.   Wish it was that easy for me, but sadly not.
