Title: 1958 Series 62 Shifter Needle Mount
Post by: JMOUL on July 02, 2025, 09:40:46 PM
Hello Again - would anyone be able to share a photo of how the gear shift indicator/needle is mounted to the shifter mechanism?  When I acquired my car years ago the gear shift indicator needle was missing.  I ordered a new one online and have that but when I asked my repair shop to install it while they were working on correcting some other issues with the gauge cluster they said they couldn't install it because what it should be mounted to was missing.  I have no idea what that piece looks like, so a photo would help me to find a replacement or have something fabricated.  Thanks in advance.

I cannot speak for 58. But my 61 has the bent wire, a cast clamp bracket, and a single screw.

This is a set of parts I had in a bag set aside so I do not lose them. Now I cannot find them to show for reference. I need to do a deep parts storage cleaning and reorganization.

Thank you!  That is quite helpful.  The replacement needle I bought sounds very similar.  Bent wire to a point (in white) attached to a cast bracket, which it can pivot on.  I just didn't know how it attached to the column - I'm sure my 58 is similar.  If it got knocked off at some point under previous ownership at least I know what to try and recreate.  Thanks again.

The spring bracket into the circle is to attach the needle.

Yes it looks like that piece is also removable. So if that was done you would be in trouble.

Just took a look at my 58 as I had to remove it to lubricate the speedometer cable. Unfortunately the retainer is behind the lower covering. As I recall, the 58 is a rigid piece with multiple bends (not a cable) which I fished up into the quadrant window and then attached it to that metal bracket in the above picture with a large head silver slotted screw.

Thanks so much!  I'll give it a try once the car is back from the shop.
