Post by: Ken Burridge on April 02, 2005, 07:00:18 AM
Could anyone tell me where the Vin number is located on a 1939 LaSalle?

Ken, to be PC the VIN came about several years after 1939, prior to the VIN, cars were IDed with a S/N.(seriel number)
Its the same number on the frame and origional engine.
Cant say for sure about the 39, but on my 38 it is located on top of the frame, just to the rear of the steering box, as the frame rolls from HORZ. to VERT.
HTH
Good Luck, took state inspector 45 minutes to find, man with 15 years experance, numbers were stamped lightly, Jim

Thanks I found it.  It was as you said on top of the frame rail immediatly behind the steering box, toward the outside edge.  It was very lightly stamped and covered with paint.

Thanks again,

Ken

I just picked up a 49 fastback. Should the vin be in the same location. Im having trouble finding any markings on the frame in the vicinity of the steering box.

Guys, guys, guys, All these simple questions! Just turn to page 29 of the February 2006 Self Starter. Tim Pawls article explains and diagrams the location of engine and chassis numbers from 1915 thru 1981.  Didnt get your copy of the Self Starter? Dont belong to the CLC? You can fix that by going back to the home page and follow the simple instructions on how to sign up to be a member of the CLC. (Cheap plug)
In the mean time, Tim says the engine number on your 49 should be stamped on a boss on the right side face (front of the block, passenger side) of the engine block (if it is an original block). The chassis number will be on the right-frame side member behind the engine support (this appears to be sort of behind the the right front wheel). Tims schematic drawing is also a grest help.
Good Luck!
