Title: blow-by under engine exhaust

Ive owned two 57 Fleetwoods, three 59 Fleetwoods and now I have one 58 Fleetwood, my favorite. Well, all of my Caddys had "blow-by" especially when the car was hot and at a stop sign, and that annoying exhaust rising up thru the engine out the hood, or out the front grille. My question fellas, what can I do to stop this? I know the engine has to breathe but I was told there are "kits" to re-feed the exhaust somehow, and stop the blow-by. Please advise and thanks for

Gday Bob,

What you need to do is to convert your "Draft Tubes" to "Positive Crankcase Ventilation" (PCV) but you will lose a lot of points for non-originality, if you are concerned about that.

If the engines are breathing that bad, then I would suggest that you have a lot of "blow-by" at the Piston Rings and may be in need of a re-build or two.

The "Draft Tube" works on the Venturi Principle which creates a vacuum behing the bottom of the tube end as you drive along, thus removing the "dirty" oil-laden air from the internals of the crankcase.   This air is replaced by air coming in through the oil filler cap filter, but if it is "Exhaling" too much whilst stopped, then it should be rectified, as it is dropping very small droplets of oil onto the road surface, and when it rains, the road becomes very slippery.  

Wasnt a problem in the old days of dirt roads as it helped to settle the dust when lots of old cars were fuming all over the place.   These days, it is considered to be a Polution Problem

P.S.   As far as "Kits" to change to PCV, I would suggest you see if you can get hold of a 61 or 62 Carillac PCV system from the Wrecking yards, and install the whole thing onto your engines.   Shouldnt be much of a hastle to retro-fit, but you will need the whole system, PCV Valve and mounting, hoses, carby spacer, and Air Cleaner attachment, plus the oil filler cap, and tube, if it is any different to yours.
