Title: Timing Gasket Set or Timken Seal and Repair Sleeve?
Post by: Brett 21441 on May 06, 2005, 08:30:08 PM
Hey Folks,

How is the quality of the 472 timing seal included in the Timing Set from Fel-Pro? This whole set costs about $20. The timing seal and repair sleeve from Timken are an additional $40… is this worth it or is the included in set Fel Pro seal ok? If the sleeve is necessary why isnt it included in the fel-pro set?

The Fel Pro should be fine and you shouldnt need a sleeve.  The only problem Ive heard of in with Fel Pro gaskets is in high performance mods with their headgaskets.

I always use the sleeve now whenever I do this job. The place where the seal rides on the hub always has a groove at that point. Why take a chance? Bob

The repair sleeve is only necessary when there is excessive wear on the hub. You be the judge on this one. Most of the time a seal will wear a small groove into the hub, but it is most often not bad enough to affect the seal. You can usually clean it up with some fine emery cloth.

In most cases, the Fel Pro seal will do just fine.
