Yesterday, after I placed the tranny in PARK, my 70 Coupe DeVille strted to roll foward. I applied the service brake and then put the emegency brake on. I started the car and moved it back about three feet. Again, in PARK the car rolled foward about three feet before I applied the brake. If the parking pawl is shot, does the whole tranny have to come out to repair it?
Check the linkage first to make sure it is indeed going into park. Wear in the linkage can prevent that.
If it turns out the park pawl is worn or broken, the trans will have to come out and be disassembled.

Disconnect the linkage at the transmission end. Then push the lever on the trans into the park position. If the car will now not move the trouble is the linkage. If the car still moves the trouble is likely the pawl. The park gear and pawl are in the extension housing. The gear is on the outside of the output carrier and front ring gear. You may be able to check the pawl by removing just the extension. You will need a new gasket and seal for this job. Unfortunately all the parts you may need to repair come out of the front end of the trans.
