Title: identifying yr. model of Cadillac
Post by: Ed Martin on March 07, 2006, 02:28:29 PM
There is a 1920s yr model Cadillac in the shop I work in.It is some form of a doctors coupe(I think). The passenger seat is small and the back folds down. Were these cars 6 or 12 v systems, and where do you find a data plate to identify what model car you have. I plan on getting it running. A good place for engine literature would also be appreciated. This car was apparently restored, as it in remarkable shape. Thanks for any help someone may offer.          Ed

(I looked at a 1927 coupe pic and the frontend with the headlight support extending from fender to fender in front of the radiator is the style of car it is)

It had a six volt system when it left the factory (as did all Cadillacs until the early 50s). Many later Cadillacs have been converted to 12 volts, but it is unlikely that one of that vintage has.

Youll need to find the engine number. On this car the engine blocks bolt to a separate crankcase. Look on the right side of the engine, below the  water inlet on the crankcase.Depending on year it may just 6 numbers or 2numbers ,a letter and more numbers. If it is a Fisher Body try looking on the engine side of the cowl for a tag.Warren

Thanks for the help guys. I was fairly certain the car had to be 6v, as I knew 12v systems emerged in the 50s. I just like to sure before you do something stupid(LOL). The cars engine #(which is the same # on the tag on the firewall) is 63-E-937. Now could someone tell me what yr. car this is?
                     thanks ,   Ed

Looking at the engine serial numbers data on page 31 of my CLC directory, it looks like the car is a 1924 model year, built that year or the year before.

Thanks for your help Fred. The car is a two door, and has a covering on the hard top. It has a storage box behind the drivers seat beside the back seat. The rear windows have T style cranks to let them down. The passenger front seat is very small with a flip down back, and is not connected to the drivers seat. I was told it is a doctors coupe. The back seat would only handle two people because of its design.

Excellent description, but specifying the model on a 1924 Cadillac is above my pay grade.

If youve taken those photos in digital format, you could post them at one of those free web-based family album sites (yahoo, etc.) and provide us with the URL (link). Or you could just email the files to one of our CLC members who own 1924 Cads. If youd like to do that, Ill send you some e addresses.

From the engine number you have provided, its a 1924 model, type V-63 vee-eight(numbers in 1924 range from 63-A-1 to 63-H-1550).  You can see the full range of body styles for that year on this page of the Clubs Cadillac Database:

Thanks Yann:
This is the best set of pics anyone has guided me to yet. This car in the shop I work in seems to be a 1924 Victoria, but I dont know how the passenger seat was designed for a standard model. The passenger seat in this car would not have been comfortable to ride in for any great length of time(for me anyhow, lol),it folds forward and there is bar in the floor it rests on, which is fully exposed when the seat is folded to the front position(the back also folds down). Thanks for the time and help to all who have participated in my quest. The man who owns this car may deside to sell it, I dont know yet. I was facinated with the relief valves on the heads for easy hand cranking!I can see why men collect these cars. Thanks again,    Ed
